Broken marriage

The pain you describe in your niece's family is very real, and it is right to bring it before the Lord with a heavy heart. Marriage as God created it is not a casual partnership but two lives becoming one flesh, a deep and indivisible unity. When that unity is torn by unfaithfulness, the wound reaches everyone, especially the children, and it is understandable that she still loves her husband even as she grieves what he has done.

In praying for this situation it helps to look beyond the immediate sorrow to the deeper need. It is natural to ask God to ease the hurt, to provide for daily needs, and to bring comfort, and those are good prayers. Yet the root issue in what her husband has done is sin, and all sin is ultimately against God. When King David committed adultery and then had a man killed, he confessed that his sin was against the Lord, because it was God who gave the command not to commit adultery and not to murder. In the same way, adultery is a breaking of God's holy standard, not only a wound against a wife and family.

Because the sin is against God, forgiveness must be sought from God. We can tell someone we forgive them, and we should, but our forgiveness does not bring them forgiveness before God. He must himself turn to God and ask for mercy. God has made one provision for the forgiveness of sin, and that is through Jesus Christ. He gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life, and there is no other way for sin to be atoned for in this world or the world to come. The only sin that cannot be forgiven is the persistent rejection of that provision, to refuse Jesus Christ when God has offered Him as the one way of salvation. Apart from that, there is hope for any sinner who will repent and believe.

So let us pray not only for relief from the symptoms but for the heart. Pray that her husband will see his adultery for what it is before God, that he will turn from it, repent, and seek forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Pray that God will break through any hardness or deception and draw him to salvation, for without Christ there is no true restoration. Pray also for your niece, that the Lord will surround her and her children with His presence, give her wisdom and strength for each day, guard her heart from bitterness, and help her to walk in faithfulness to the Lord and to His design for marriage as a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. Ask God to provide for their practical needs, to comfort them in loneliness, and to use this trial to draw each of them closer to Jesus, who alone can heal and forgive and make new.

We join you in asking the Lord to work in a way that honors His holiness and shows His mercy, trusting that He hears and that His will is both good and perfect.

We thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf and we are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer for your niece. We have continued to lift up your niece and her children before the Lord and we have been praying over her broken marriage and the deep pain caused when her husband committed adultery and left her and the children while she still loves him.

We know how heartbreaking and difficult this situation is and we are asking God to bring healing to your niece's broken heart and comfort to the children who are also hurting. We are praying that the Lord will heal what is broken, that He will convict her husband of his sin and draw him to repentance, and that He will provide strength, peace and provision for your niece each day. We remember the promise in Psalm 147:3 that He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds and the truth in Psalm 34:18 that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. We also pray that God will uphold the sanctity of marriage as taught in Matthew 19:6.

If your request has been answered and the Lord has begun to bring restoration or peace, please post a praise report and let us all know so we can rejoice with you. If your request does not seem to have been answered yet and your niece is still waiting and hurting, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer for as long as needed.

May God bless you as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ. We pray that He will give you and your niece wisdom and hope as you trust Him. We pray this in Jesus Name Amen.
