Good and Faithful Servant
Please pray for me about this: I recently started a relationship with someone out of loneliness (although I genuinely do care for him and love him but knew it probably wasn't in God's will for us to be together and marry). He was a professing Christian but I later learned he held to certain false teachings yet I didn't end the relationship until after a month when certain things became too much for me. I have now broken his heart and made a big mess. Please pray about it all. Thank you.

We hear your heart, dear sister, and we grieve with you over the pain this situation has caused, both for you and for him. Loneliness is a heavy burden, and it’s understandable that you sought companionship, but we must always remember that God’s will is perfect, even when it leads us through seasons of waiting. The Bible warns us in 2 Corinthians 6:14, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" Even if someone professes Christ, if their beliefs are rooted in false teachings, it can lead to spiritual harm and conflict in the relationship. You were wise to recognize this and take action, though it came with great cost.

We also want to gently address the nature of your relationship. The term "boyfriend" implies a courtship that was not moving toward the biblical standard of marriage between a man and a woman committed to Christ. The Bible is clear in Hebrews 13:4, "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers." If there was any sexual intimacy outside of marriage, we must repent of that as well, for it is not God’s design. But take heart, God’s grace is sufficient, and His mercy is new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Now, let us come before the Lord together, lifting up this situation in prayer:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble and repentant hearts, seeking Your forgiveness and Your guidance. Lord, we lift up this sister who has walked through a difficult season of loneliness and now carries the weight of a broken relationship. We ask that You would heal her heart and his, that You would mend what has been torn and restore what has been lost. Father, we confess that we do not always seek Your will first, and we ask for Your forgiveness for the times we have rushed ahead of You or ignored Your warnings. Lord, we pray that You would reveal Your perfect plan for her life, that she would trust in Your timing and Your provision. We also ask that You would bring godly men into her life, men who love You wholeheartedly and who will lead her in righteousness. For the one whose heart is broken, we pray that You would comfort him, draw him closer to You, and reveal any areas of his life that need alignment with Your Word. Lord, we declare that You are the God of redemption, and we trust that You will work all things together for good for those who love You (Romans 8:28). Strengthen her faith, Lord, and help her to walk in obedience to Your Word. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen."

Sister, we want to encourage you with the truth that God is not surprised by this situation, and He is already at work in it. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." You are not alone, and this is not the end of your story. We urge you to seek godly counsel, perhaps from a pastor or a mature Christian woman, who can walk with you through this season. Spend time in God’s Word, allowing Him to speak to you and guide you. And remember, Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths."

Lastly, we must emphasize the importance of coming to God in the name of Jesus Christ. It is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and there is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life fully to Him, confessing your sins and trusting in His sacrifice on the cross for your salvation. He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). May you find peace and hope in Him as you move forward.

We are so glad you brought this to us, it takes honesty to name both the loneliness that opened the door and the hard decision you made once you realized the relationship wasn’t right. That kind of clarity and courage doesn’t cancel out the pain you’re feeling now, but it does tell us something about your heart: you want to honor God even when it costs you, and that matters deeply.

Loneliness has a way of pressing us toward comfort that feels like love, and many of us have made similar choices under its weight. You’re not alone in this, and you aren’t somehow irredeemable because you got drawn in before pulling back. What you’re walking through right now, the ache of having hurt someone, the uncertainty about how to move forward, is a hard place, but it can also become a place where God’s grace meets you in a very real way.

One of the simplest and most grounded things you can do right now is refuse to let loneliness keep you isolated from other believers. Push into worship, into a small group or a Bible study, into honest conversation with a wise older saint at your church. Loneliness often grows in the dark; bringing yourself where God’s people gather can slowly, quietly remind you that you belong to a family bigger than your current distress.

We’re praying with you, that God would bring genuine healing to the young man you dated, that he would guard you both from bitterness or false guilt, and that in this season he would draw you deeper into friendships and a life that is rich with his presence rather than driven by desperation.

Lord Jesus, we ask you to hold this dear woman close. Quiet her heart with your own peace, and give her wisdom for the days ahead. Heal the hurt she caused unselfishly, and meet the man she left right where he is. In the lonely spaces, be her closest companion, and teach her to trust your love more than any human comfort. Amen.

What a mercy it is that you have been brought to see the snare, even though it came late and with much pain. The deceit of the natural heart is a deep pit, how easily we calm and quiet ourselves with something that looks like love and companionship, calling it a solace when it was but a device to fill the hollow place that only Christ can occupy. Yet to be broken on account of sin, to feel the wound, is not the worst state. A broken bone is no trifling matter, but the bones which the Lord has broken must not merely grow callous and painless; they are broken that they might be set aright by His own hand and made to rejoice. The heart that is emptied and humbled is a cavern where Despair would gladly dwell, but it is also the very sacrifice God will not despise.

Beware, however, of a repentance that springs alone from the terror of having made a mess or the misery of having broken his heart. Such repentance is often superficial, hardly more than skin deep, and withers in a night. True repentance yields a loathing of the evil itself. You have not yet come to the end of the matter if you have only sorrow for the consequences. The soul that is deeply conscious of guilt says, “Lord, I have no rights but the right to be punished; I have no claim on You.” That dove-eyed repentance looks not merely at the ruin left behind, but at the wounded Christ, and feels that her heart must bleed because she wounded Him. The repentance that glorifies God sets the sinner ever afterwards craving after holiness, and you will know it is authentic if it is practical and lasting.

Do not try to draw up repentance from the depths of your own heart as one draws water from a well. Ask Christ to work it in you by His Holy Spirit. It is the sense of blood-bought pardon that dissolves the heart of stone, law and terrors alone do but harden. Bring your poor broken heart to the heart that was pierced on Calvary. A broken heart can never long be divided from the broken Savior. Best of all, as the Healer of broken hearts, God has chosen One whose own heart was broken. Go to Him, and you shall find peace while you are at war with sin.

Let that broken column stand as a picture of this season. A good confession was begun, “I will follow Thee,” but it was broken off with a “but.” A heavy blow from the withering hand of sin has snapped it. So let not your determination stand unfinished. Broken columns serve as memorials of what might have been, but Christ can take the broken column and the contrite spirit and build something new.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have done well to see the ruin and call it what it is. That pricking of the heart, that sorrow over the snare you walked into, this is not a small thing. For He blesses not those who never stumble, but the poor in spirit, those who tremble at His words and whose soul is utterly broken before Him. A sacrifice to God is a contrite spirit; a heart that is crushed and humbled He will not despise. You see the mess, you feel the weight, and this very ache can become your medicine if you do not waste it.

But do not stop at grieving one sin. Repentance demands a severe surgery. Go apart alone, as Christ often withdrew to the mountain to pray, and there begin the hard work. Call to mind not only this misplaced affection but every secret coveting, every false word, every vain thought you have let lodge within you. Lay your sins out in detail and accuse yourself without mercy. This is the medicine: the righteous man is his own first accuser. For the wound that festers within does not heal by a few tears alone. Esau wept bitterly yet found no place of repentance because his grief was not a changed life. Sorrow that leaves the will untouched is just noise.

In your loneliness you reached for a comfort you knew was not God's will, and you let deceit have a foothold, first to your own soul, then to that young man. Put away falsehood and speak truth with your neighbor, for we are members one of another. You have broken a heart, and that is a serious thing. But even now you can walk softly. Let your heart be so contrite that it does not strike back, does not excuse itself, does not rise up, but is ready to be ill-treated and keeps silent. Pray inwardly as Moses did, with no display, just the inward cry that God alone hears.

Do not despair of cleansing. Defilement from sin is washed off with long time and strict repentance, with tears and fervent lamentation, but it is washed. The defilement of mud is easier, but the defilement of the heart, when you stir yourself up to hate it and to break it before God, He Himself will make clean. Say with David, "Create in me a clean heart, O God," and He will answer the sacrifice of your contrition. But from this day forward, walk with all lowliness of mind toward all, and do not again let loneliness sell you a lie.

The ache you feel right now is real, and it is worth paying attention to. It is not just the pain of a broken relationship or the sorrow of hurting someone else. It is the weight of a heart that knows it stepped outside of what God intended. You said you knew this was not His will for you from the start, yet you moved forward anyway out of loneliness. That is a hard thing to admit, but it is also the doorway to everything good God still has for you.

The battle you lost was fought long before you officially ended the relationship. It was fought in your heart, in that space where longing quietly pushes aside what you know to be true. When loneliness shouted louder than wisdom, a relationship was formed that God never designed for you. In a real way, you had already given your heart to something that was standing between you and your Father. Anything that comes between us and God, even a person we care for, can become an idol. It does not have to be carved from stone. It can be a strong desire that we cling to at the cost of obedience. That does not mean your care for him was not genuine, but it does mean it was misplaced. And God, in His mercy, allowed the situation to become so unbearable that you had to let go. That breaking point was not cruelty; it was grace pulling you back.

The guilt that now sits heavy on your chest is what Scripture describes as sin being ever before you. You cannot outrun it, and that is a mercy too. Guilt is not meant to destroy you; it is meant to drive you home. David thought he had covered his tracks after taking Bathsheba, but when the prophet confronted him, he finally stopped hiding. He said, “I have sinned.” And that was the moment everything turned. In the same psalm, he realized God does not want religious performance. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart. That is what you are bringing now, and He will not despise it.

The lie that might tempt you now is to think you need to do something to earn back God’s favor, to stay in a kind of legal relationship where you punish yourself enough to feel forgiven. But that is not the gospel. God does not want a legal relationship with you; He wants a loving one. Through Christ’s blood, a new covenant has been made, and that blood cleanses you from all sin. When you confess what you have done, laying it bare before Him honestly, He is faithful and just to forgive you and to cleanse you from all unrighteousness. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That does not mean it was nothing. It means the price for it has already been paid in full.

What you did was serious because it began in the heart before it ever showed in your life. Yet the same heart that wandered can be made new. God promises to give a new heart and a new spirit to those who turn from their idols. That is your part: repentance. Turn from the idol of that relationship. Turn from the false comfort of seeking fulfillment in a person instead of in Him. Do not just regret the mess; turn your face away from what caused it. Ask Him to wash you thoroughly, and He will. The blood of Jesus Christ, God’s Son, will cleanse you, and fellowship that was broken will be restored.

You are not the first person to make a mess of things out of loneliness, and you will not be the last. But the very glory of God is to cover sin, to take what is stained and make it white as snow. When you truly grasp how much you have been forgiven, praise will rise from your heart spontaneously, not because you deserve it, but because His grace is so stunning. Let that brokenness lead you not to despair but to the only One who can make you whole again. I am praying that you will receive that new heart, walk in the light, and know the joy of being known by God, not on the basis of your performance, but through the blood of His Son.

We want to thank you for the trust you placed in us by sharing your heart and allowing us to stand with you in prayer during this difficult time. It takes courage to recognize when a relationship is not aligned with God’s will, and even more to act on that conviction, especially when it brings pain to someone you care for deeply. We have been lifting you up, asking the Lord to grant you peace, wisdom, and healing as you navigate the aftermath of this decision.

We prayed for clarity and strength as you ended the relationship, that God would help you to honor Him in your words and actions, even when it was hard. We also asked Him to soften your boyfriend’s heart, to bring comfort where there is hurt, and to draw him closer to the truth of His Word. Most of all, we prayed that you would feel the Father’s love wrapping around you, reminding you that He is your true source of fulfillment and that His plans for you are good.

If the Lord has already begun to answer these prayers—whether through a sense of peace, restored focus, or even reconciliation in a way that honors Him—we would love to hear your praise report. Your testimony could encourage others who are facing similar struggles. On the other hand, if the weight of this situation still feels heavy, or if new challenges have arisen, please don’t hesitate to share those with us again. We are here to continue standing with you, lifting your needs before the throne of grace.

May the Lord bless you with His presence in the days ahead. May He fill the spaces in your heart that loneliness once occupied, and may He guide your steps as you seek to walk in His will. We pray all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
