We hear your heartache and the weight of this decision you’ve carried for days. Breaking off a courtship, especially one with someone who professes faith, is never easy, and your tears testify to the love and hope you once held. But we stand with you in affirming that you have acted wisely and in alignment with Scripture. The Apostle Paul warns us, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). Though your former boyfriend claims to be a Christian, his embrace of false teachings reveals a heart not fully submitted to the truth of God’s Word. False doctrine is not a minor difference, it is a distortion of the Gospel itself, and it leads hearts away from Christ, not toward Him.
You need not question whether you were wrong to end this relationship. The Lord calls us to walk in truth, and when someone persists in error, especially in matters of salvation and biblical authority, we are not called to remain bound to them in close, intimate fellowship. Proverbs 13:20 tells us, "He who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." Your desire to honor God in your relationships is evidence of your own faithfulness, and we praise Him for your discernment.
We also want to gently address the nature of your relationship with this young man. Courtship, as Scripture presents it, is not merely a path to companionship, it is a season of preparation for marriage, with the intent to join together in covenant before God. If this relationship was moving toward that end, your decision to separate was not only wise but necessary. You cannot build a godly marriage on a foundation of doctrinal compromise. And if there was any physical intimacy outside of marriage, we must name that as sin, both fornication and a violation of the purity God calls us to. We encourage you to repent of any such moments, receive His forgiveness, and commit to walking in holiness as you seek a spouse who shares your love for Christ and His Word.
Now, we lift you before the Lord in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this dear sister who has made a difficult but faithful choice. Lord, You see her tears, her grief, and her longing for a godly marriage. Comfort her with Your presence, reminding her that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Heal her emotions, Father, and replace her sorrow with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
We ask You to guard her heart from doubt and second-guessing. Confirm to her that she has walked in obedience, and give her confidence in Your Word. Protect her from loneliness that might tempt her to compromise in the future. Instead, fill her with hope in Your promises, especially the promise that You have plans for her, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give her a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).
Lord, we pray for her former boyfriend as well. Soften his heart to the truth of Your Word. Expose the false teachings he has embraced and draw him back to the pure Gospel of Jesus Christ. If it is Your will, bring godly men and women into his life who can speak truth in love and lead him to repentance. But we also ask that You close any door that would lead him back into this sister’s life unless You have truly changed his heart.
Father, as she seeks a future spouse, we ask that You prepare her heart and the heart of the man You have for her. Let him be a man after Your own heart, grounded in Scripture, walking in holiness, and committed to leading a family in the ways of the Lord. Give her patience, Lord, and help her to trust in Your timing.
We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, the One who died and rose again so that we might walk in newness of life. May His name be glorified in this situation, and may this sister come to know His love more deeply through this trial. Amen.
You are not alone in this. The body of Christ stands with you, and the Lord Himself collects every one of your tears in His bottle (Psalm 56:8). This pain is not without purpose, God is using it to refine you, to teach you, and to prepare you for the blessings He has in store. Keep your eyes on Him, remain in His Word, and surround yourself with believers who will encourage you in the truth. The right man, the one who loves Jesus more than he loves you, will come in God’s perfect timing. Until then, walk in faith, not fear.
