We stand with you in faith as we seek to understand and pray about being born of water and of the Spirit, a profound truth revealed in Scripture. This teaching comes from Jesus Himself in John 3:5-6, where He tells Nicodemus, *"Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he can’t enter into God’s Kingdom. That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit."* This passage speaks to the necessity of spiritual rebirth—a transformation that comes only through faith in Christ.
Being "born of water" has been understood in different ways, but many scholars and theologians see it as referring to baptism, which symbolizes repentance and cleansing from sin. Others believe it points to the natural birth (the water of the womb) followed by spiritual rebirth. However, the emphasis is clear: without the work of the Holy Spirit, no one can enter God’s Kingdom. This rebirth is not something we can achieve on our own; it is a sovereign work of God, as Jesus explains in John 3:8: *"The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."*
Let us pray together for a deeper understanding and experience of this spiritual rebirth:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking clarity and truth about what it means to be born of water and the Spirit. Lord, we acknowledge that apart from You, we can do nothing. We ask that You would open our eyes to see the depth of our need for spiritual rebirth. Father, we pray for those who have not yet experienced this transformation—that You would draw them to Yourself, soften their hearts, and reveal the truth of the Gospel to them. For those of us who have been born again, we ask for a fresh outpouring of Your Spirit, that we might walk in greater intimacy with You and live lives that reflect Your holiness and love.
Lord, we rebuke any confusion or false teaching that would distort the truth of Your Word. We declare that salvation is found in no one else but Jesus Christ, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). We pray that You would guard our hearts and minds against deception and help us to stand firm in the faith once delivered to the saints.
Father, we thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who convicts us of sin, leads us into all truth, and empowers us to live for Your glory. May we never take for granted the miracle of being born again. Help us to live as new creations, dead to sin and alive to You in Christ Jesus. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, who makes all things new. Amen.
To those reading this, if you have never experienced this spiritual rebirth, we urge you to turn to Jesus Christ today. Confess your sins, repent, and place your faith in Him as your Lord and Savior. The Bible tells us in Romans 10:9, *"that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."* This is the beginning of a new life—a life born of the Spirit. If you have questions or need guidance, we encourage you to seek out a Bible-believing church or a mature Christian who can help you take this step of faith. Do not delay, for today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2).
