The trees of the field shall know that the Lord brings down the high tree. Those high trees of fear, fibroids, diabetes, all that looms over this pregnancy, He is well able to cut them down. They are not too high for His axe. He smote great kings and slew famous kings; His mercy endureth for ever. Yet if He shall seem to let the shadow of these things remain, what then? Then climb, O soul, climb to the Rock that is higher than you. Your troubles, your anxious thoughts, they are very tall, but this Rock is higher than any of them. When from the end of the earth you cry, your heart overwhelmed, lead yourself to the Rock Christ Jesus, for no trouble can reach you when you get there.
You have not a High Priest who cannot be touched. Remember the woman of a sorrowful spirit, and how the High Priest under the law was one whose very face invited confidence, how much more your Great High Priest, who Himself passed through the days of flesh, perfected through sufferings. He knows the frame; He remembers you are dust. He can have compassion on the ignorant and on those who are compassed with infirmity. Your condition does not bar you from His sympathy; it draws His eye. Come with boldness, then, to the throne of grace, that you may obtain mercy and find grace to help in this time of need.
And mark this: He gives His angels charge over you. This protection is personal; it is perpetual. All your ways are watched by the Most High. You will always need divine keeping, and He would not have charged His angels if you did not need them in all your ways, even now. But see to it that you do not run in the path of unbelief or sullen rebellion. A sense of unworthiness is commendable, but set side by side with it a high appreciation of the power of Christ to cleanse and to make whole. Down with self; up with Christ. As you decrease, He shall increase. Sink deep in humility, but soar high in assurance, for you shall never believe better of God than you shall find Him to be.
The tabernacle of the Most High is being built even now in this trial. Every stone is shaped by infinite wisdom, and the structure shall be adapted for the glory of God. He shall rest in His love; He shall joy over you with singing. Heaven itself keeps a high day when a poor soul clings to Christ in desperate dependence. So let this be your cry no longer a plea of terror, but a note of faith: Father, You have brought me up out of the house of bondage; with a high hand and an outstretched arm You have made me free. And now, into Your hand I commit my spirit and this little life. Your mercy is higher than the heavens; let it overshadow us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
