How gracious is the Lord to sustain you when visible means are cut off! You have seen His hand upholding you in the very teeth of want, and that is a token of His covenant love, for we are usually driven into the Port of Grace by a storm. When the brook dries up, then Elijah finds the widow's cruse. Rejoice, then, that you have been made to know the Lord by personal experience, for it is not what we read in the Bible, but what we feel in the heart which actually gives us our best acquaintance with God. Meditation upon His former helps will be the whetstone to sharpen faith for the present trial. Because He has been your help, therefore in the shadow of His wings you will again rejoice.
Yet I perceive you still have need. Car insurance and a phone press upon your mind. It is well, for the Lord would have us always needing Him, lest being increased in goods we say we need nothing and so fall into spiritual poverty. Beware of getting spiritually rich in yourself! The very fact that you must cry out again for these common mercies tells me the Shepherd is keeping His sheep near His side by the crook of necessity. And what though these be the horses’ furniture, the bits and bridles of daily travel and conversation? In that day of His grace, upon the bells of the horses shall be written, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD. There is no burden too small to cast upon Him, for He numbereth the very hairs of your head.
Now, look away from the means to the Master Himself. If you have been tempted to think that hearing sermons, reading good books, or sitting in pews should supply your need, learn that these are but the disciples; they cannot cast out the spirit of care. Christ alone must do it. “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” Bring your empty purse and your due bills, and spread them before the throne, saying, “Lord, You must do it.” And remember, when God says, “I will,” His resolution is supported by Omnipotence and sealed with Immutability. Has He not said, “I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys”? That promise was made to a needy soul, and it stands fast forever. The God who has fed ravens and multiplied meal will not fail you now.
Let your prayer be, “Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation,” and not merely, “Send me a cheque.” It is the Giver, not the gift, we must pursue. When He gives Himself, every insurance payment and every phone charge becomes a remembrancer of His faithfulness. And if there be a little longer waiting, consider Him who endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself, lest ye be weary and faint in your minds. Your trial is not unto blood; it is but a light affliction which is but for a moment, working out a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Cry mightily and rest confidently, for the Lord will yet perform His word. Believe on the name of the Son of God, and know that you have eternal life, and with it, all provision for the life that now is.
