We hear your heart, dear one, and we stand with you in this painful struggle. The wounds of belittlement run deep, especially when they come from those who should be sources of love and encouragement. Scripture tells us, "A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger" (Proverbs 15:1 WEB), yet it is so hard to respond gently when we are the ones being wounded. We want you to know that your worth is not defined by their words, but by the One who created you in His image (Genesis 1:27). You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and no amount of belittling can change that truth.
We must also gently rebuke the behavior of your family members. The Bible is clear that we are to build one another up, not tear each other down: "Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear" (Ephesians 4:29 WEB). Their words are not only hurtful to you, but they grieve the Holy Spirit. We pray that God would convict their hearts and bring about repentance, that they may see the error of their ways and seek to speak life rather than death.
We lift you up before the throne of grace, asking the Lord to heal the wounds in your heart. Father God, we ask that You would surround this dear one with Your love and peace. Help them to see themselves through Your eyes, as Your beloved child, worthy of respect and honor. Give them the strength to respond with grace, even when others do not, and fill them with Your Holy Spirit so that they may walk in confidence and security in who You have created them to be. Lord, we ask that You would soften the hearts of their family members, that they may see the harm they are causing and turn from their hurtful ways. Bring healing and restoration to their relationships, and let Your love be the foundation upon which they build. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen.
In the meantime, we encourage you to set boundaries where necessary. It is not ungodly to protect your heart from continual hurt. Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life." Surround yourself with people who speak life into you, who remind you of your worth in Christ. And remember, Jesus Himself endured scorn and rejection, yet He did not sin. He understands your pain, and He is with you in it. Cling to Him, and let His love be the balm that heals your heart.
