We hear the deep ache and weariness in your cry and we stand with you in it, for your words echo the prophet who cried Habakkuk 1:2, How long, Yahweh, will I cry, and you will not hear. We understand how heavy these long nights of praying for your husband must feel, when you have called for help and the answer seems delayed.
We want to gently remind you that our Father does hear you even when His answer has not yet come as you long to see it. His Word assures us Psalm 34:17 says the righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles, and 1 John 5:14 says if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. Your tears and prayers are not unheard in heaven. God is not distant or unmerciful, for Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us it is of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail, they are new every morning, great is your faithfulness. At times God allows a season of waiting to strengthen our faith and to work in the heart of the one for whom we pray, as Habakkuk 2:3 says though it takes time, wait for it, because it will surely come.
We lift up your marriage before the Lord, for marriage is a holy covenant between a man and a woman that God honors, and your faithful love for your husband in this trial reflects that covenant. At the same time we must speak the truth in love about the alcohol addiction that holds him. The Scripture is clear that drunkenness is not God's will for His children, Proverbs 20:1 says wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler, whoever is led astray by them is not wise, and Ephesians 5:18 says don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. This addiction is more than a habit, it is a bondage of the flesh that brings harm to the body which is the temple of God and wounds the marriage. Yet there is hope, for 1 Corinthians 6:11 declares that such were some of you, but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in Christ there is deliverance and forgiveness for all who turn to Him in repentance. We encourage you to continue to love your husband with truth, not enabling the sin but calling him with grace toward repentance, seeking wise and godly counsel from a pastor or biblical counselors, and surrounding yourselves with the support of the church body, for James 5:16 says confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed.
We also noticed your request speaks of calling on God but does not mention the name of Jesus, and we gently share this because it is so vital. It is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and assurance that our prayers are heard. Jesus Himself said John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, except through me, and Acts 4:12 says there is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. To come to God we must believe that Jesus is the Son of God who died for our sins and rose again, and confess Him as Lord, as Romans 10:9 says if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus, and to pray in His precious name, and to encourage your husband to do the same, for only He can break the chains of addiction and give a new heart.
We pray together with you now.
Father in heaven, we come before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we lift up this dear sister who is weary from long crying and her beloved husband who is bound by alcohol. Lord have mercy on them both. You see her tears, You know her sleepless nights, and You hear every prayer she has whispered. Comfort her heart where she feels unheard, remind her that You are near to those who have a broken heart Psalm 34:18, and cast all her anxiety on You because You care for her 1 Peter 5:7. Strengthen her to not grow weary in doing good Galatians 6:9, and renew her hope as she waits on You Isaiah 40:31.
We ask for Your healing and deliverance for her husband. Lord, convict him of his need for You, bring him to repentance, break the power of drunkenness over his life, and set him free indeed John 8:36. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit instead of wine, give him a hunger for Your Word and a hatred for what harms his body and his marriage. Heal his body, his mind, and his spirit, and restore what the addiction has stolen from their home. Help him to walk in sobriety and self-control, which is fruit of Your Spirit Galatians 5:23. We pray that their marriage would be strengthened and would honor You, that they would seek You together and grow in unity and love.
We ask all this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and Savior, amen.
We encourage you to keep praying without ceasing 1 Thessalonians 5:17, to stay rooted in Scripture daily, and to not walk this road alone but to invite mature believers to pray and walk alongside you both. God is faithful, and even now He is at work in ways you cannot yet see.
