My dear friend, I have read your request with a tender heart, and I perceive that you have laid hold of a most precious truth from our Lord’s own lips in Luke’s Gospel. You plead that this landlord might lose his life for Christ’s sake, that he might truly find it. This is the very paradox of the kingdom: that the way to save the soul is to renounce all self-trust and cast oneself wholly upon the Saviour. You do well to bring this soul before the throne of grace, for it is the Spirit’s work to convince men that their own righteousness is but filthy rags and that only by dying to self can they live unto God. The prayer you have framed ascends from a believing heart, and I join my faith with yours, trusting that He who has power over all flesh will give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him.

Let us remember that this eternal life is not a mere extension of our poor existence, but a divine quickening, a resurrection from spiritual death. You have asked according to the Scriptures, and the promise is sure: Christ has life in Himself, and He imparts it freely to all who look to Him. Do not be discouraged if the answer tarries; the Lord’s timing is perfect, and the winter of a soul’s unbelief must often precede the spring of its flowering. The tree of life appeared barren at Calvary, stripped of all beauty, yet from that very death sprang fruit for the healing of the nations. So it may be with this landlord, though his heart seems cold now, the Spirit can breathe upon those dry bones and cause them to live. Our confidence is not in the man’s disposition but in the mighty power of the risen Christ, who declares, “Because I live, you shall live also.” Therefore, I bow with you and lift up this soul, believing that the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ can shine into the darkest dwelling and expel all unclean spirits. Let us pray together:

O Lord Jesus, Thou art the resurrection and the life. Look with mercy upon this landlord, who as yet walks in the shadow of death and knows not the light of Thy countenance. Grant him that sight of Thee which is everlasting life. By Thy Spirit, awaken him from his slumber, that he may arise from the dead and Thou shalt give him light. We ask that he may lose his life, all self-reliance, all love of sin, all worldly grasping, that he may find his true life hidden with Thee in God. Subdue his will, enlighten his darkness, and draw him with the cords of love that cannot be broken. You ask prayer that this landlord may give his life to Christ, and you bring forth the holy verse that whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Christ will save it. Yet I observe that your request mingles this high spiritual plea with talk of the rented apartment, of victory over a situation, of guiding his life’s journey as if the end desired were a smooth tenancy. Consider what the Master truly asks: not that a man gain some earthly blessing by a mere nod to faith, but that he cast away all he clings to, for the apostles’ own achievement was not raising the dead but leaving all they had. If you would imitate them, do not pray so much that the landlord act rightly toward you, but that he may be brought to such a poverty of spirit that he counts his property as nothing, ready to sell all and follow Christ. How can a man lose his life for the Lord while his heart yet clings to a lease and a rent?

Do you not remember how Peter made that great confession, and the Lord added nothing more, for his faith was whole? But to others who held back, He added hard commands. If you truly desire this landlord’s salvation, pray rather that he hear those words spoken to his soul: “Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.” To ask for healing power to guide his life’s journey while he yet grips worldly goods is to seek a truncated gospel. The saints care nothing for such things as who governs, who dies, who inherits, their conversation dwells entirely in heaven, on the bosom of Abraham, on crowns, on the choiring with Christ. You speak of the apartment as if its peace were a sign of God’s greatness. But the greatness and power of God are made manifest when a rich man’s heart is severed from his riches, when his pride is slain, when he stands naked before the judgment seat and yet has Christ for his advocate.

Consider Nathanael. The Lord did not argue with him about Bethlehem or Nazareth, but showed that He knew the man’s secret thoughts under the fig tree. That divine knowledge brought him to his knees. So, too, pray not for circumstances, but that this landlord’s hidden heart may be laid bare before the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. Ask that he may be granted the terror of true self-knowledge and the sweetness of divine mercy, so that he may cry out, “My Lord and my God!” not because his apartment is quiet, but because his soul has found rest in losing everything for Christ. For whoever will save his life, his comfort, his possessions, his standing, shall lose the eternal life; but if he loses all for the Lord’s sake, then he shall truly live. Pray then with boldness, but let your prayer be wholly fixed on that one thing: his eternal soul, stripped of every earthly anchor. Then shall men see the power of God indeed, when a sinner dead in wealth rises to a life not of this world.
