Arrogant teen, abusive and defiant

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for my ### yo son. He is arrogant and defiant and abusive to me. I'm always single mom. No earthly dad. He literally tells me he hates me and doesn't want a relationship with me. Since he started High School in August his disrespect has gotten so much worse. And his arrogance. Please pray for his salvation and safety. My safety. Please pray his heart will be softened towards me and his family.

We lift up this heavy burden you carry as a single mother, and our hearts ache for the pain and disrespect you are enduring from your son. The Word of God reminds us that rebellion and arrogance are not new struggles—Proverbs 22:15 tells us, *"Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him."* Yet even in this, we must remember that discipline must be rooted in love, and our ultimate hope is in the Lord’s power to transform hearts.

Your son’s behavior is a reflection of the spiritual battle raging within him. His hatred and defiance are not just against you but against the authority and love God has placed in your life as his mother. Ephesians 6:1-3 commands children to *"obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother,' which is the first commandment with a promise: 'that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth.'"* His rebellion is not only hurting your relationship but placing him in opposition to God’s design for his life.

We also recognize the absence of an earthly father in his life, and while this is a deep void, we know that God is the ultimate Father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5). Your son needs to encounter the love and discipline of our Heavenly Father, who can break through his hardened heart. His salvation is the most critical need—without Christ, his heart will only grow colder. Romans 10:9 declares, *"that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved."* We must pray fervently that the Holy Spirit convicts him of his sin and leads him to repentance.

As for your safety, we stand in agreement that the Lord will be your shield and protector. Psalm 91:4 assures us, *"He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart."* You are not alone in this—the Lord sees your tears, hears your cries, and will sustain you. We also encourage you to seek wise counsel from your church or trusted believers who can support you in setting boundaries that honor God while protecting your well-being.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with a broken heart for this mother and her son. Lord, You see the pain, the disrespect, and the hatred that has taken root in this young man’s heart. We ask that You break through his arrogance and rebellion by the power of Your Holy Spirit. Soften his heart, Lord, and draw him to Yourself. Let him encounter Your love in a way that shatters his pride and leads him to repentance. Save him, Father—bring him to the foot of the cross where he can find true life in Jesus Christ.

We pray for this mother’s strength and wisdom. Give her the words to speak, the boundaries to set, and the courage to stand firm in Your truth. Protect her, Lord, from harm—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Surround her with Your peace that surpasses understanding and provide godly support to walk alongside her in this season.

Father, we rebuke the spirit of rebellion and defiance in this young man’s life. We declare that no weapon formed against this family will prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Restore what has been broken, Lord, and let Your love and truth prevail. We ask for a miracle in this relationship—that hatred would turn to love, defiance to submission, and arrogance to humility.

May Your will be done in this situation, and may both mother and son find their hope and identity in You alone. We pray this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer. Amen.

We've been thinking about you and your son, and our hearts go out to you. It's tough being a single mom, and we can only imagine the pain you're feeling. We want you to know that you're not alone, and we're here for you.

We've been praying for your son, asking God to soften his heart and draw him close. We believe that God can break through the hardness and rebellion, and bring him to a place of repentance and salvation. We're also praying for wisdom and strength for you, as a mother. God sees you, He hears you, and He's with you every step of the way.

We've been reminded of Psalm 147:3, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." We believe that God is healing your heart, and mending the broken places. We're trusting in Him, and we're here to support you in any way we can.

Let's keep praying together, asking God to work in your son's heart, and to give you the strength and wisdom you need as a mother. We're believing for a miracle in your relationship, and we're confident that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think (Ephesians 3:20). Let's trust in Him, and let's keep praying in Jesus' name.

Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing us with another day, and for all you do for all of us. All glory and honor belongs to you Father. Please Heavenly Father soften hearts and heal any bad feelings in this relationship. I lift this prayer up on your glory Father God and ask that you grant your perfect will. In Jesus name I pray. Amen
