Another unsaved habit

There's a habit among unsaved people, when they get caught (or noticed) doing something wrong (basically sinful), instead of owning up to it, they lie about it, or try to "pass the buck." It could be anyone doing this, and it seems to be a common pattern. Even in the Bible, Cain knew where Abel lay dead, but said to God when asked, "Am I my brother's keeper?" Adam and Eve passed the buck; it was the first one, second one, etc., who "convinced me." (Although they could have not gone along.) But passing the buck and lying, isn't that contrary to Christian teaching? "If we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive us." If someone says he has no sin, he is a liar and the truth is not in him. "Amen." So then, isn't this trait more a work of the flesh? I think so.

This is a profound observation about the human condition and the stark contrast between the ways of the world and the ways of God. You’ve touched on something deeply rooted in Scripture—the tendency of fallen humanity to deflect, deny, and deceive rather than take responsibility for sin. Indeed, this pattern is as old as sin itself, as you noted with Adam, Eve, and Cain. Their responses reveal the heart of rebellion: shifting blame, justifying actions, and refusing to humble themselves before God.

The Word of God is clear on this matter. Proverbs 12:22 tells us, "Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight." And in 1 John 1:8-10, we read, "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we haven’t sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us." These verses underscore the necessity of confession and repentance, which are impossible when we refuse to acknowledge our wrongdoing.

This habit of passing the buck or lying to cover sin is indeed a work of the flesh, as Galatians 5:19-21 warns: "Now the deeds of the flesh are obvious, which are: adultery, sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit God’s Kingdom." Deception and blame-shifting are fruits of a heart that is not submitted to God, and they lead only to destruction.

But praise be to God, who offers a better way! In Christ, we are called to walk in the light, to confess our sins, and to receive His forgiveness and cleansing. James 5:16 exhorts us, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective." This is the path of humility, restoration, and freedom—far from the bondage of deception and self-justification.

Let us pray together for those trapped in this cycle of denial and deflection, that their eyes would be opened to the truth of their sin and the grace of God:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, recognizing the brokenness of the human condition. We see how easily we fall into the trap of deception, how quickly we shift blame or deny our wrongdoing rather than face the truth. Lord, we confess that this is not Your way. Your Word tells us that confession brings forgiveness and healing, yet so often we resist it. We ask You to break the chains of pride and self-deception in the lives of those who are caught in this pattern. Soften their hearts, Lord, and open their eyes to see their sin as You see it—not to condemn them, but to lead them to repentance and restoration.

We pray for those who do not yet know You, that they would come to understand the weight of their sin and the freedom found only in Jesus Christ. May they turn from their ways and embrace the truth of the Gospel, where confession and forgiveness are found. For those who are already in Christ but struggle with this habit, we ask for Your conviction and strength to walk in the light. Help them to take responsibility for their actions, to confess their sins, and to experience the joy of Your forgiveness.

Father, we also pray for ourselves, that we would not fall into the same traps. Guard our hearts from pride and self-justification. Teach us to walk in humility, to speak the truth in love, and to extend grace to others as You have extended it to us. May our lives reflect the transforming power of Your Spirit, who produces fruit of honesty, integrity, and righteousness.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. It is only through Him that we have access to You, and it is only by His blood that we are cleansed from all unrighteousness. Thank You for Your mercy and grace, which are new every morning. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

To those reading this, we encourage you to examine your own heart. Are there areas where you have been deflecting, denying, or deceiving? The Lord invites you to come clean, to confess, and to receive His forgiveness. There is no sin too great for His grace, but we must first acknowledge it. Let us strive to live in the light, where true freedom and healing are found.

We've all been there, haven't we? Caught doing something we shouldn't, and instead of owning up, we find ourselves scrambling for excuses or shifting the blame. It's a common human tendency, but it's not the way of the Lord. In fact, it's the very thing that got Adam and Eve kicked out of the Garden of Eden.

But here's the good news: God is faithful to forgive when we confess our sins. He's not interested in our excuses or denial; He wants us to come clean, to be honest with ourselves and with Him. That's the path to true freedom and healing.

Let's pray for those struggling with this habit, that they would have the courage to face their sin and turn towards the light. Let's also pray for ourselves, that we too would walk in honesty and humility before the Lord.

Lord, we come before You today, acknowledging our tendency to hide behind lies and excuses. Help us, Lord, to be honest with ourselves and with You. Give us the courage to confess our sins, to turn from our ways, and to walk in Your light. Help us to extend the same grace to others that You have extended to us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

We are deeply grateful that you entrusted us with this heartfelt prayer request, lifting up the struggle we all face when confronted with sin—whether in ourselves or in the world around us. It is a heavy burden to witness the pattern of shifting blame and deception, especially when Scripture so clearly calls us to humility, confession, and truth.

We have continued to stand with you in prayer, asking the Lord to break the chains of this fleshly habit—not only in the lives of those who do not yet know Him, but also to guard our own hearts from its subtle pull. We have prayed for conviction that leads to repentance, for the courage to own our wrongs before God and others, and for the grace to extend forgiveness as Christ has forgiven us. We have also asked the Holy Spirit to reveal the root of this tendency, whether it be pride, fear, or self-preservation, so that it may be uprooted by the power of His truth.

If the Lord has already begun to answer this prayer—whether through softened hearts, moments of honesty, or a fresh awareness of His mercy—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be a light to others walking this same path. But if the struggle persists, or if new battles have arisen, we invite you to post this request again. We are committed to lifting it up afresh, trusting that God is at work even when we cannot yet see the fruit.

May the Lord draw near to you as you seek Him, reminding you that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. May He replace every lie with His truth, every excuse with His grace, and every fear with the boldness that comes from walking in the light. We continue to pray that His Word would take deep root in your life and in the lives of those you love, bearing the fruit of confession, restoration, and freedom.

In Jesus’ precious and powerful name, we pray. Amen.

One bad habit unsaved people have is they do something in a wrong way then blame someone else when it causes problems. Tired of being made the scapegoat.
