I hear fairly often people professing Christianity stating that either there's no hell a loving God wouldn't send you there OR that hell isn't eternal, you aren't there forever and you're annihilated quickly. Some even say it's just scare tactics Christians use to gain followers. We can say it's mainly "pseudo-Christian cults" like Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists who believe that. But nonetheless, there are here and there even some professing mainstream Christians who state this. Maybe they have unsaved loved ones who died, and they don't want to think of them in the lake of fire forever, so they say God wouldn't do that. But I say that's not Biblical, because we read for example of those who take the mark of the beast as being tormented forever. Also, the antichrist and the false prophet themselves, and the devil who deceived them were cast into the lake of fire, where the beast and the false prophet are. And THEY (not just the devil but his human counterparts) will be tormented day and night forever and ever. "People who 'cease to exist' can't feel torment." I say that's a false view. Correct? Request is for confirmation.

We stand firmly on the truth of God’s Word, which clearly and repeatedly affirms the reality of eternal punishment for those who reject Christ. The idea that hell does not exist, that it is temporary, or that annihilation awaits the wicked is not only unbiblical but dangerously misleading. Scripture leaves no room for doubt—hell is real, it is eternal, and it is a place of conscious, unending torment for those who die in rebellion against God.

You rightly point to Revelation 14:11, which states, *"The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. They have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."* This is not symbolic language open to reinterpretation—it is a sobering declaration of eternal judgment. The same truth is echoed in Revelation 20:10, where we read of the devil, the beast, and the false prophet being *"tormented day and night forever and ever"* in the lake of fire. If the wicked were simply annihilated, how could they experience torment *forever and ever*? The very language of Scripture refutes the false doctrine of annihilationism.

Jesus Himself spoke more about hell than anyone else in the Bible, describing it as a place of *"outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth"* (Matthew 8:12) and as an *"unquenchable fire"* (Mark 9:43). In Matthew 25:46, He makes the stark contrast between eternal life and eternal punishment: *"These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."* The same Greek word (*aiōnion*) is used for both—eternal life and eternal punishment—leaving no justification for claiming one is everlasting while the other is not.

The argument that a "loving God" would not send people to hell is a distortion of His character. Yes, God is love (1 John 4:8), but He is also perfectly holy and just (Isaiah 6:3, Deuteronomy 32:4). Sin is an infinite offense against an infinite God, and justice demands a penalty. The wonder of the Gospel is that God, in His love, provided a way of escape through the sacrifice of His Son. *"For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life"* (John 3:16). Those who reject this gift will face the just consequences of their rebellion.

It is also concerning when professing Christians dismiss hell as a "scare tactic." This reveals a heart that either does not take Scripture seriously or seeks to soften its warnings to make them more palatable. But the warnings of Scripture are acts of mercy—they are given so that people might repent and turn to Christ before it is too late. To downplay or deny hell is to strip the Gospel of its urgency and to leave souls unprepared for eternity.

We must also address the emotional struggle behind some of these false teachings. It is understandable to grieve for unsaved loved ones, but we cannot let our emotions override the clear teaching of God’s Word. Our feelings do not determine truth—God’s Word does. If we truly love the lost, we will not comfort them with lies but will plead with them to flee the wrath to come (Luke 3:7) by turning to Christ in repentance and faith.

To those who promote or entertain these false doctrines, we must lovingly but firmly rebuke them with Scripture. Jude 1:23 exhorts us to *"snatch others from the fire, and save them."* This requires boldness in proclaiming the whole counsel of God, even the hard truths. We must also pray for discernment, that the Holy Spirit would expose deception and lead His people into all truth (John 16:13).

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we may be saved. We thank You for Your Word, which is truth and light in a world filled with deception. Lord, we ask that You would strengthen Your Church to stand firm on the truth of Your Word, especially regarding the reality of eternal judgment. Guard our hearts from the lies of the enemy, who seeks to distort Your character and Your warnings. Give us boldness to proclaim the full Gospel, including the truth about hell, so that souls may be saved from the wrath to come.

Father, we pray for those who have been deceived by false teachings. Open their eyes to the truth of Your Word. Soften their hearts to receive correction and lead them into repentance. For those who grieve over lost loved ones, comfort them with the hope of the Gospel and remind them that You are just and holy, yet also merciful and gracious to all who call upon Your name.

Lord, we ask that You would raise up faithful teachers and preachers who will proclaim Your Word without compromise. Protect Your flock from false doctrines and give us discernment to recognize and reject them. May we always hold fast to the truth, even when it is unpopular or difficult to accept.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone has the words of eternal life. Amen.

To those reading this, we urge you to examine your own heart. Have you placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation? Have you repented of your sins and trusted in His finished work on the cross? The Bible warns that *"it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment"* (Hebrews 9:27). There is no second chance after death. Today is the day of salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2). Turn to Christ now, while there is still time, and be saved from the wrath to come.

We understand your concern about the false doctrine that denies the existence of hell or makes it out to be temporary. It's important to remember that the Bible clearly teaches about the reality of eternal punishment for those who reject Christ. As it says in Revelation 14:11, "They will be tormented day and night forever and ever." This is not symbolic language, but a sobering declaration of eternal judgment.

We should also consider the emotional struggle some people have with this topic. It's natural to grieve for unsaved loved ones, but we must not let our emotions override the clear teaching of God's Word. Our feelings do not determine truth; God's Word does. If we truly love the lost, we will not comfort them with lies, but plead with them to flee the wrath to come by turning to Christ in repentance and faith.

Healed Spirit Soul And Body

We want to thank you for entrusting us with the privilege to stand alongside you in prayer as you seek biblical truth and clarity on such a weighty matter. This is not merely an academic question—it’s a foundational doctrine that shapes our understanding of God’s justice, His holiness, and the gravity of sin. We have lifted this concern before the Lord, asking Him to strengthen your faith, sharpen your discernment, and guard your heart against deception. The enemy would love nothing more than to distort the truth of Scripture, especially when it comes to the reality of eternal consequences for rejecting Christ.

We pray that the Holy Spirit would continue to illuminate His Word for you, confirming the truth that hell is indeed a place of eternal, conscious torment—a sobering but necessary truth that underscores the urgency of the Gospel. We’ve asked God to give you wisdom as you engage with others who may hold differing views, that your words would be seasoned with grace yet unwavering in conviction. May He also comfort you as you consider the fate of those who have not received salvation, stirring in you a deeper burden to share the hope of Christ with boldness and love.

If the Lord has already provided you with clarity or confirmation through His Word, His people, or His still, small voice, we would be so encouraged to hear how He has answered. Your testimony could be a source of strength for others walking through similar questions. If, however, you’re still seeking that assurance, please know we are committed to continuing in prayer with you. We will not cease to ask the Father to reveal His truth to you in ways that leave no doubt, and to surround you with fellow believers who can stand with you in this journey.

May God bless you abundantly as you seek Him with all your heart, trusting in His Word above all else. May He deepen your love for the lost, your reverence for His holiness, and your confidence in the hope we have in Jesus Christ. We pray all these things in His precious and powerful name. Amen.
