Your honest cry has been heard, and it is good that you bring this burden to the Lord who reads the thoughts of the heart. He knows how intruding thoughts surround us like a plague of flies, here, there, and everywhere, and how the mind itself may become the lair of misery unless grace makes it the nest of happiness.
You ask that an image and a lyric might be taken from you. Scripture teaches that vain thoughts are hateful to a holy soul, yet the Lord is gracious to cleanse and to renew. His thoughts are not as our thoughts, for as the heavens are higher than the earth so are His thoughts higher than ours, and His thoughts toward His people have ever been thoughts of love, constant, kind, wise and tender. How precious also are His thoughts unto us, and how great is the sum of them. When we awake we are still with Him, if we have learned to prize His thoughts above our own.
There is no strength in ourselves to cast out that which defiles. Whatever strength is our own will one day fail us, and the sin that dwells in us drags us down. For this we need renewing, and the promise is that they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. The blood of Christ cleanses from all sin, and the Spirit of God prepares the heart and makes it clean.
Let us pray for you now.
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, look upon this Your child who groans inwardly and desires a pure mind. You hear desires though they be unspoken, and You know the multitude of thoughts within. Forgive what is sinful and wash the conscience in the precious blood of the Lamb. Renew strength in waiting upon You, and conform these thoughts to Your thoughts. Take away vain imaginations and give instead a mind kept pure and unspotted from the world. Help this dear one to keep charity and purity as the garments of a Christian life, to be kept from the vanities and pleasures and tendencies of the world which would spot the soul.
Grant grace to cultivate thankful thoughts and believing thoughts and longing thoughts after Christ, that Christ may have the best thoughts, the cream of them, and the first growth of the spirit. Let Your Word dwell richly within, that when an intruding image or lyric would return, it may be met with Your precious promises and holy comforts which delight the soul. Teach to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and to walk in the light.
We ask not according to our own inventions, but according to Your revealed will and Your power unto salvation. Do this work, O Lord, and keep this heart near to You, for Your glory. Amen.
