We join with you in this prayer and we understand your desire to have your mind cleansed and renewed, to be free from a song, its lyrics, its artist, and an image that is lingering in your memory. We thank you for coming to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, for it is only through Him that we have access to God and it is in His name that we find cleansing and peace.
We are reminded of how God calls us to guard our minds and hearts. His Word says in 2 Corinthians 10:5 that we demolish arguments and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. And in Philippians 4:8 we are taught, Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things. God does not want us to be conformed to the patterns of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our mind as Romans 12:2 tells us, and He promises in Psalm 51:10 to create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. We also take to heart Psalm 101:3, I will set no vile thing before my eyes, which reminds us to be careful about what we allow before our eyes and into our ears.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You know the song, the lyrics, the artist, and the image that is troubling this mind. We ask that You would in Your mercy wash away what is unwanted and unhelpful, and remove its hold permanently from memory. Cleanse this mind and heart, Father, and create a clean heart and renew a right spirit within. Help us to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ and to fill this mind instead with whatever is true, pure, lovely and praiseworthy. Your desire for a pure and quiet mind is a gracious one, and the Lord who searches the heart hears the groaning that you cannot fully express. He knows the intruding thoughts that surround us like a plague of flies, and He knows how to prepare the heart and to cleanse it.
The Scriptures teach us that thoughts are not trifles. God watches our thoughts and His own thoughts toward us are precious, constant, kind and full of love from everlasting. Our thoughts are not His thoughts, for His ways are higher than our ways as the heavens are higher than the earth. When vain or unclean thoughts lodge within us, they defile and weary the soul, and our own strength will soon fail if we contend in our own power. There is need of renewing, for the sin that dwells in us drags us down, and only the blood of Christ can cleanse us from all sin and only His Spirit can renew our strength.
You have asked that an artist, the lyrics of a song, and an image might be removed from your memory. Bring this honestly before the Lord in prevailing prayer, with low thoughts of yourself and high thoughts of His mercy. Confess that you desire to be unspotted from the world, to keep your mind as a garment unspotted by its vanities and pleasures and by the common songs and literature that so easily spot the soul. Ask Him not only to take away what troubles you, but to fill the room that is left with better things, for the mind abhors a vacuum. Cultivate thankful thoughts and believing thoughts and longing thoughts after Christ. Let Him have the best thoughts, the cream of them, and the first growth of your spirit. Store His Word in your heart, that when you awake you may still be with Him, and that in the multitude of your thoughts within you His comforts may delight your soul.
It is wise also to put away the occasions that feed such memories. Turn away from the music and the images that have caused the spot, and give your eyes and ears to what is pure and lovely. Preach to your own soul not your own notions, but what is revealed by God, and ask the Lord that you may undertake fresh work done to a nobler tune, with more expectancy, more confidence, more faith and more God reliance.
