Your honest prayer for a clean mind is heard, and God understands the struggle you are describing. The real spiritual battle takes place in the thoughts and imagination. That is where suggestions, images, sounds and fantasies are planted, and what you choose to do with them determines where they lead. If you entertain them and turn them over in your mind, they take root. If you bring them to God and turn away, you keep your mind under His care.
What fills your mind when you are deliberately listening or looking will be what comes back when your mind is unoccupied. If the mind is fed with the music of the world and with images from social media, those sounds and pictures will return again and again on their own. If the mind is fed with the things of the Spirit, with worship and with the Word, then life and peace begin to fill those quiet moments instead. Scripture makes a clear distinction here. Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, and the mind of the flesh brings death and is hostile toward God. Those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit, and the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.
God does not work like a button that instantly deletes a memory. He works by washing and making new. It is by His mercy we are saved, through the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He has poured out abundantly. He makes you a new creation in Christ and then He renews you day by day. He is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart, and He deals with you with eternity in view, not only for present relief but for lasting transformation. He wants to renew the whole way you think.
You were created in the image of God with the capacity to choose, and you can choose what you will set before your eyes and ears. That means there is a practical part to this prayer. Ask God for His renewing work, and also take steps to guard your mind. Turn off and remove what triggers the memory, avoid going back to the post or the song, replace that space with what is pure and worshipful, and fill your mind intentionally with Scripture and with music that honors Christ. Over time, as you walk after the Spirit rather than after the flesh, the hold of those sounds and images will weaken.
I pray for you that God who is rich in mercy will wash your mind and renew you by His Spirit, that He will give you the mind of Christ and fill you with life and peace, that He will help you to make wise choices about what you allow into your thoughts, and that He will guard your heart as you seek Him with eternity in view. In Jesus name, may He give you strength to turn from what pollutes and to dwell on what is pure, and may He bring quietness to your thoughts as you keep your mind on Him.
