Your prayer for deliverance from words of music that cling to the mind is heard, and it is right to bring such a burden to the Lord who alone can keep the heart and cleanse the thoughts.
Let it never be forgotten that in all that God does, He acts from good reasons, and He has provided a way of deliverance that no man would have thought of. As it is written, He is gracious unto him, and says, Deliver him from going down to the Pit: I have found a ransom. Job 33:24. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance through a ransom if God had not thought of it, and He has not only invented the way but has found the ransom Himself. It is a gift of Divine Love in Christ Jesus, who is our redemption and our song.
There are words and melodies that fasten upon the soul as archers besetting the traveler, and the power of darkness can use even a tune to tempt and to trouble. Yet we are taught that deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin, and we must look to our heavenly Father altogether and alone for it. He has delivered us from the power of darkness, and He is able to deliver you from the fascinating power of that which now vexes you, to keep back your soul from the Pit and your life from perishing.
Therefore turn wholly from that music which ensnares you, and give your ear and your heart to better music. Deborah sang concerning the overthrow of Israel's enemies, and we have a far richer theme, for we have been delivered from worse enemies and saved by a greater salvation. Let our gratitude be deeper and let our song be more jubilant. When you are led out of this Egypt of vexation, your deliverance will be by Divine power, not by any easy work or hasty word of your own, for unless a supernatural power is put forth, any form of deliverance is worth nothing. He who brings forth His people does so with a mighty hand.
Seek then to fill the mind with the Word of Christ. Let the psalms and hymns and spiritual songs dwell in you richly. When those words return, answer them with Scripture, with prayer, with a song unto the Lord. And here is the believer's conduct after affliction and after deliverance from it, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Psalm 118:17. Declare His works in your private prayer, in your household, and with music on your lips magnify the name of the Lord.
We join our prayer with yours now, that the Lord in mercy would cleanse your memory and guard your thoughts. O Lord our God, be gracious unto this soul and say, Deliver him from going down to the Pit, for Thou hast found a ransom. Wash the mind that has been troubled by these words, and set it free by the blood of Christ. Keep back this soul from vain imaginations, and give instead songs of deliverance, that the heart may be filled with Thy praise and may live to declare Thy works. Grant strength to turn away from that which defiles, and grace to love that which is pure and holy. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our ransom and our deliverer. Amen.
Take courage and watch unto prayer, and keep your heart with all diligence, for the Lord has not forsaken them that seek Him.
