We rejoice with you in this beautiful and godly desire to be a lover of God rather than a lover of pleasure, and we join our faith with yours in Jesus Christ's name.

The Word speaks directly to this longing when it warns that in difficult times men will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 2 Timothy 3:4, and it exhorts us, Don't love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him, 1 John 2:15. This is not because God wants to withhold joy from us, but because true and lasting joy is found only in Him, for In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more, Psalm 16:11. The pleasures of this world are fleeting, but loving God satisfies the soul eternally.

We are encouraged that you desire to love Him as He first loved us and as He commands us, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind, Matthew 22:37. This love is not mustered by our own willpower alone, but is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit and is nurtured as we deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world, Titus 2:12, and as we draw near to God, trusting He will draw near to us, James 4:8.

We lift you up together in prayer.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the work You have already begun in this heart that desires You above all else. We ask You to increase this hunger and thirst for You and to fill this dear one with Your Holy Spirit, that love for You would grow stronger each day. Help us all to walk by the Spirit so we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh, and teach us to delight ourselves in You and Your Word. Turn our eyes from worthless things and fix our affection on Jesus, who is our greatest treasure and pleasure. Strengthen this one to choose You daily, to abide in Christ, and to find full satisfaction in Your presence. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pursue Him diligently through daily time in Scripture, through prayer, through fellowship with other believers who also love Him, and through obedience. As you seek first God's Kingdom and his righteousness, Matthew 6:33, He will faithfully transform your desires to align more and more with His.

We hear the honesty in your short prayer and we are grateful you brought it to the Lord so plainly. Wanting to love God more than pleasure is a good and humble desire, and we join you in asking Him to shape that in you.

One thing that has helped many of us is to think of this less as trying harder in a moment and more as training over time. Like preparing for a long race, growth comes through small, regular practices that keep our hearts turned toward Him, even when we do not feel strong. That takes pressure off needing to be perfect today and helps us see ourselves as a work in progress in His hands.

A simple next step that may help is to choose one small, sustainable practice for the next week. For example, beginning the day with a brief, honest prayer inviting God into your choices, or setting aside a few minutes to be still with Him before other pleasures compete for attention. Notice when the pull toward pleasure feels strongest and bring that moment to Him right then.

Father, we lift our friend before You in Jesus name. Draw this heart closer to Yourself, give joy in knowing You, and strengthen each choice that honors You. Keep forming this life day by day and remind our friend of Your nearness and grace as they walk with You. Amen.

Your prayer is one which God delights to hear, for it asks for the very heart of true religion. The Scripture warns of those who are lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God, and it teaches us that every act of sin arises out of the absence or the decline of the love of God, while perfect love to God leads to a life lived with God.

We love Him because He first loved us. It was not our love that procured His mercy, for God was love before we ever turned to Him. It was because of His great love that the Father gave His Son, and it is the sight of that self denying love, of Christ who stooped to bleed for man, that kindles love in our cold hearts. When the soul sees what He has done, it begins to say, My Father, my God, my own God, I love You.

This love is not a mere feeling, but a holy affection that changes the whole man. Holiness deals not only with outward acts but with the thoughts and intents, the purposes and motives of the heart. It requires that the heart shall be set on God and that it shall beat with love to Him. And when that love fills us, it strengthens us for service, it constrains us, and it makes us courageous to turn from the pleasures that would draw us away.

Therefore we will pray with you and for you. May the Lord increase your faith, for without faith it is impossible to please Him, and may He shed abroad His love in your heart by the Holy Spirit. May He teach you to find your joy under the shadow of His wing, near the heart of God, where the soul must be glad. May He keep you from cupboard love that seeks only what it can get, and give you that pure love which seeks God for Himself alone, to live for His praise and His glory.

Heavenly Father, grant to this soul a growing love for You that overcomes all love of pleasure. Draw the heart to Christ, keep it in holiness, and let love abound and abide, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayer is good and pleasing to God, to ask to be a lover of God rather than a lover of pleasure. Scripture warns that in difficult times people will be lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, and it calls us instead to love the Lord with all our heart and to find our joy in Him.

There are two kinds of pleasure. One is sinful pleasure. It promises delight but brings shame and condemnation, it must hide in secret, and it leaves the soul agitated and inflamed and burdened. The other is true pleasure, the joy that comes from belonging to Christ. That pleasure leaves the soul free, it cheers and expands the heart, and it does not fade. As Paul said, rejoice in the Lord always, and again I will rejoice. This is the pleasure we are meant to pursue.

To love God more than pleasure is to live by the Spirit and not by the flesh. By flesh Scripture does not mean the body itself, but a life that is entangled in self indulgence and excess, that makes the whole person fleshly. By the Spirit, even the body becomes spiritual, when we choose self control and a life ordered toward what pleases God. If those who mourn for an earthly loss can for a time forget gain and pleasure and insult and envy because sorrow possesses them, how much more should those who mourn for sin and long for Christ show a greater self denial.

This is a work of God's mercy. It is His kindness that not only delivers us from evil but gives us so many good things besides, and enables us to not grow weary. Holiness is preserved as we walk in faith and keep ourselves from what defiles that holiness. Follow peace with all people and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord, and keep yourself pure whether married or unmarried, honoring marriage as God designed it.

You can practice this even in ordinary life in the city, in your household and work. Through prayer and fasting and learning compunction, through turning quickly from temptation and setting your mind on Christ, God trains the heart to love Him more.

Let us pray together for you.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this desire You have placed in this heart. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our only Savior, that You would increase love for You and weaken love for sinful pleasure. Fill this soul with Your Spirit, give strength to resist the flesh, grant true joy in Christ that is clean and lasting, and lead into a life of peace and holiness. Teach self control, guard the heart and mind, and help to live for what pleases You above all passions, that heavenly blessings may be obtained by Your grace and mercy. Amen.
