We lift up these two individuals and all those in their lives to You, Lord. Your Word tells us, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life" (John 3:16). We pray that if they have not yet surrendered their hearts to You, that You would draw them near, open their eyes to the truth of the Gospel, and soften their hearts to receive Your gift of salvation. There is no other name by which we can be saved but the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). We declare that salvation is found in Him alone, and we ask that You would reveal Yourself to them in a powerful and personal way.
Father, we also pray for those connected to them, family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. May Your Spirit move mightily in their lives, convicting them of sin and leading them to repentance. "The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9). The very fact that this prayer rises from your heart is a token of divine grace, for it is God who writes intercession upon men’s hearts. Yet learn this solemn truth: the Spirit’s intercession is not for the unregenerate; He makes intercession for the saints. And our Lord Himself declared, “I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me.” This does not quench our prayers for sinners, far from it, but it sets them in their proper place. When we pray for our fellow sinners, we are in sympathy with our divine Savior, who made intercession for the transgressors. Yet the power of that prayer will never be separated from the proclamation of the gospel itself.
Prayer for souls must walk hand in hand with witness. If you desire the salvation of these two, you must tell them as best you can what their condition is and what the way of salvation is. The Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed.” That is the simple statement of the way of salvation, trusting in Christ, depending upon Him without fear. Bring them to this point: that they dare leave the whole matter of their eternal safety with Jesus in unquestioning confidence. Pray, yes, but plead with them also. All men are approachable at some time or in some way. Do not let your intercession become a cushion for your own silence. The Book of Remembrance will reveal the value of hidden ones who pleaded for souls, but the testimony of opened lips is God’s ordinary means to bring them in.
And do you yourself know this plenteous redemption? You speak of their need, but rest you fully upon the ransom? The moment a sinner believes, salvation in full is received through His blood. Grateful souls read in every letter from Jesus that glittering sentence, “He loved me and gave Himself for me.” Lay hold upon that yourself with both hands, and then from that sure platform stretch out your arms to pull these accursed ones out of the pit, thrusting up to the very elbows in the mire, if need be, with the love that stoops from the highest heaven to the gates of the deepest hell. Plead on. The Lord may bring them by a way they do not know. But plead with them as well as for them, and leave no stone unturned till they come to Christ, the only refuge.
