The cry of your heart reaches the ears of the Lord, for He is not far from any who call upon Him in truth. When you are on your knees, weeping and begging for deliverance, know that this is not a sign of His absence, but often the very workshop where He fashions His greatest mercies. You feel the darkness pressing in, and you wonder if He has forgotten you. That arrow of doubt is shot from the pit, whispering that His ear is shut and His arm will not move for you. But I am bound to believe that the Lord does sometimes whisper to the heart of His children and assure them in trial that they shall not be crushed. The enemy would have you think your case is too desperate, that the prey cannot be taken from the mighty, that your own heart resists deliverance. Yet it is precisely in such desperate cases that Heaven’s clock of mercy strikes the appointed hour. No one would have thought of deliverance from the pit through a ransom if God had not invented the way, and He declares, “I have found a ransom.” Your deliverance is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God who shows mercy.
You plead for safety as well as rescue, and this is right, for He who brings forth also keeps. The same grace that delivers from the guilt of sin delivers also from its power. Trust Him for sanctification as well as for justification; look to your heavenly Father altogether and alone. In the midst of your groaning, give not a tongue to your unbelief, for your feelings are not the measure of His faithfulness. Your cries have not fallen on deaf ears. The God who sent the dove after the flood, the gentle creature that signaled deliverance from universal ruin, still hears those who call upon Him from the depths. In that ancient day, when all flesh had corrupted its way and the waters covered the mountains, He remembered Noah and brought forth a new creation. You are now in a tempest, it seems, and you plead for escape and safety as one clinging to the last plank. The dove came then not with an olive branch only, but pointing to the true Deliverer who rescues not one household from a wooden ark, but leads the whole world up into heaven. Do not despair: this same Deliverer is Christ. If He has already rescued you from the greater shipwreck of sin and death, will He not also care for the lesser storms? “If we neglect so great salvation,” will we escape? This salvation is not from earthly wars or from temporary discomforts, but from the dissolution of death, the destruction of the devil, the kingdom of Heaven. Keep this before your eyes. The trial you beg to be removed is real and painful, but it is not the whole story. God is faithful, and He will not suffer you to be tempted above what you are able; but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
That way of escape is not always an immediate removal of the affliction, but often it is the strength to endure, so that the devil gains no foothold. You cry, “Get me out of this!” I hear the agony, and Christ Himself knows it: “Now is My soul troubled,” He said, and He asked the Father to save Him from that hour. Yet He did not flee the suffering when it was the Father’s will, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously. So you, too, pour out your heart with tears, but then hand yourself over to His wise love. Seize hold of chastity, if that is the besieged virtue, and run beyond the reach of the devil. If you flee vigorously, he will cease to pursue. Tarry not; look neither to the right nor to the left, but flee from every idolatrous comfort or sinful crutch that might seem to ease the pain but will only enslave you further.
And do not refuse Him who speaks. He who shook the earth at Sinai now speaks from heaven, promising to shake not only earth but heaven, removing what is made so that what cannot be shaken may remain. The kingdom you have received cannot be moved. Are you tempted to think your present trouble will never end? It will be shaken and pass away; only the unshakable kingdom endures. So let us have grace to serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Come to your King, fall at His knees with both body and mind. You are drawing near to the God whom seraphim veil their faces to behold. He will raise you up when you are down. Converse with Him with all gentleness and meekness, not demanding your own way but trusting His. Watch, therefore, and be ready, for the Day will come when every tear is wiped away and the thief gains nothing from the sleeping house. So often, the Lord allows us to reach the very end of ourselves because that's when we finally stop leaning on things that can't hold us up. Our own plans, our own strength, even our own reputation, they all crumble when a storm like this hits. But when we fall, we fall toward Jesus. Think of the father who came to Him for his dying little girl. He was a man of position, but none of that mattered when what he loved most was slipping away. He risked everything and threw himself at Jesus' feet, begging him greatly. His desperation drove him to the only One who actually had power.
You asked God to keep you safe, and you asked to be brought out of this. True safety is only found in the Lord, not in any earthly preparation. The strongest security we devise for ourselves is an illusion if God isn't guarding it. So turn that plea into confidence. Don't try to justify yourself or figure out if you have a right to ask. The best plea in all the world is simply, "God, be merciful to me." That position of humility is where deliverance is born.
