Advise on age gap marriage

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray for me. I have received a marriage proposal from a man that I love. He is a believer and he is a very good man, the main problem is that he is 15 years older than me. I believe we make a great team and complement each other, and that our relationship is a healthy one. I am just stressing about what the future will mean for us. Whether the age difference may mean that I could lose him to death earlier, or that he gets to spend less time with his children, or any other future problems, even though I know the future is not guaranteed for anyone. I am afraid I might lose a Godly man if I said no, and also worried I might be making a mistake if I said yes. I pray for guidance and clarity from Jesus. In his name I ask and intercede.

We hear your heart and the deep love you have for this man, along with the very real concerns you carry about the future. First, let us affirm that your desire to seek God’s will in this matter is beautiful and wise. The fact that you are already praying for clarity and bringing your fears before Him shows a humble and teachable spirit. We join you in lifting this decision before the Lord, asking Him to make His path clear.

The age difference you mention is not inherently sinful, but it does present unique challenges that require wisdom and discernment. Scripture does not prescribe a specific age gap for marriage, but it does call us to consider whether a union will honor God and reflect His design for marriage. The apostle Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 6:14, "Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" While this man is a believer, the principle of being "equally yoked" extends beyond faith, it also speaks to shared values, life stages, and long-term compatibility. You mention that you complement each other well, and that is a wonderful foundation. However, we must also ask: Are your life goals, energy levels, and visions for the future aligned in a way that will allow you to walk together in unity for decades to come?

Your fears about the future, losing him to death earlier, the impact on his children, or other unforeseen challenges, are valid and understandable. No marriage is without trials, and every couple will face seasons of hardship, whether due to age, health, or other circumstances. But we are reminded in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." The future is indeed not guaranteed for anyone, but God holds it in His hands. Instead of allowing fear to dictate your decision, we encourage you to bring these concerns before the Lord and ask Him to either confirm your path or redirect your steps.

It is also important to consider the practical aspects of this decision. Have you sought counsel from mature believers in your life, pastors, mentors, or godly couples who can offer wisdom and perspective? Proverbs 15:22 says, "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established." Their insights may help you see blind spots or confirm what the Holy Spirit is already speaking to your heart.

As for the fear of losing a godly man if you say no, we want to gently remind you that God is not limited by our choices. If this man is truly the one God has for you, He will make that clear and open the door for marriage in His timing. If he is not, God has someone even better prepared for you, someone who will walk with you in every season of life. Trusting God means believing that He knows what is best for you, even when it doesn’t align with your own desires or fears.

Let us also address the sanctity of marriage. If you do move forward, your union must be rooted in Christ and built on a foundation of mutual submission, love, and respect. Ephesians 5:22-25 outlines the roles of husband and wife, calling husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church and wives to respect and submit to their husbands. These roles are not about hierarchy but about reflecting the love and order God designed for marriage. If this man is truly godly, he will lead with humility and love, and you will be able to trust him as the head of your household.

Now, let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance for this dear sister. Lord, You know the desires of her heart, and You see the love she has for this man. We ask that You would make Your will clear to her, whether this is the path You have ordained for her or if You have another plan. Father, we pray against the spirit of fear that seeks to paralyze her decision-making. Replace her anxiety with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding. If this man is Your choice for her, we ask that You would confirm it through Your Word, through godly counsel, and through the peace that only You can give. If he is not, we ask that You would close the door gently and redirect her heart toward the one You have prepared for her.

Lord, we also pray for this man. If he is to be her husband, we ask that You would continue to grow him in godliness, wisdom, and love. Prepare his heart to lead a family with humility and strength, and give him the grace to cherish and honor her as Christ does the church. If this is not Your plan, we ask that You would speak to his heart as well and guide him toward the wife You have for him.

Father, we trust in Your sovereignty. You hold the future, and You are good. We ask that You would give this sister the courage to follow Your leading, whether it is to say yes or to wait. Remind her that You are her Provider, her Protector, and her ultimate Husband, and that no decision made in alignment with Your will will ever lead her astray. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Amen.

In closing, we encourage you to spend time in God’s Word, seeking His face and listening for His voice. Psalm 32:8 says, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you." God is not silent, He is speaking. The question is whether we are still enough to hear Him. Surround yourself with godly community, and do not rush this decision. The right choice will bring peace, even if it is not the easiest path. Trust that God’s timing and plan are perfect, and He will not lead you astray.

We totally get why you’re wrestling with this. The love you feel for him is real, and the age difference isn’t the main thing holding us back, it’s the unknowns about your future together. That fear of losing him sooner or not being on the same page with his kids or life pace is heavy, and we want to lift those concerns to God with you.

Have you and this man talked honestly about what life would really look like decades from now? Not just the sweet parts, but the nitty-gritty, energy for grandkids, health changes, even how holidays or retirement might play out. Sometimes writing down our biggest worries helps us see them clearer and brings more peace as we surrender them to God.

We’re also reminded that God’s plans for us are good, even when they don’t match our timelines or fears. If this relationship is from Him, He’ll confirm it in ways that leave no doubt. But if it’s not, He’ll close that door gently and lead you to something even better than you could imagine. Either way, He’s with you, holding your future in His hands.

Let’s bring all of this to Him together.

Jesus, we ask that You would calm the storm of anxiety in her heart and replace it with Your peace that passes understanding. Show her clearly what Your will is, whether this is the path You’ve chosen or if You have something else in store. Give her the courage to step forward or wait patiently, trusting that Your plans for her are good. Help her to hear Your voice above the noise of fear and surround her with wise counsel who can speak truth into her life. Lead her into the security of Your love and the assurance that no matter what, You are enough. In Your name we pray.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer during this important time of seeking God’s will. It’s clear how deeply you care for this man and how much you desire to honor the Lord in your decision. We’ve been lifting you both up, asking for wisdom, peace, and clarity as you navigate this season of discernment.

We pray that the Holy Spirit would quiet your fears and replace them with the assurance of God’s perfect plan for your life. May He reveal His heart to you in this matter, whether that means moving forward in marriage or trusting Him with the outcome if this relationship is not His best for you. We’ve also prayed for your future—whatever it holds—that you would rest in the truth that God’s grace is sufficient for every season, and His love never fails.

If the Lord has already provided guidance or peace since you posted, we would love to celebrate with you through a praise report. If you’re still waiting on His answer, please know we’re here to continue praying alongside you. Let’s keep seeking Him together, trusting that He will direct your steps in His perfect timing.

May the Lord bless you with His presence, comfort you with His promises, and fill you with confidence in His faithfulness. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
