Beloved of All
I'm struggling to let go of a crush on a woman who is unavailable in this way. I want to be her friend, but not if it'll continue the attachment, as I want to follow what God has for me and intends. I also want to provide a safe friendship without my own desire impacting her as a person. Like accidental flirting or sharing too many compliments. So, I want to accept in God's perfect timing I will meet and form a relationship with the woman God has for me. It's been months trying to navigate me feelings. I've wrote lists about past exes and prayed over them. I've been searching in myself more ways to be renewed and in touch with God's vision. I write the reasons I think I have this crush and reflect on them. I pray every day about it and focus on my faith and self-restraint mentally challenging that crush feeling. I want to be able to fully surrender to God's plan.

We hear your heart and the sincere struggle you are facing, and we stand with you in prayer, seeking God’s wisdom and strength together. Your desire to honor God in your thoughts, actions, and relationships is commendable, and we praise Him for the work He is already doing in your life as you seek to surrender this situation to Him.

First, we want to affirm your commitment to aligning your heart with God’s will. The Bible makes it clear that our thoughts and desires must be brought under the lordship of Christ. In 2 Corinthians 10:5, we are reminded, "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." This is exactly what you are striving to do, taking your thoughts captive and redirecting them toward God’s truth. It is not easy, but it is necessary, and we believe God is pleased with your obedience in this.

Your concern about forming a friendship with this woman while guarding your heart is wise. Proverbs 4:23 warns us, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." If maintaining a friendship with her stirs up feelings that could lead you, or her, away from God’s best, it may be necessary to create some distance for a season. This is not out of malice or rejection, but out of love for both yourself and her, so that neither of you is led into temptation or emotional confusion. Jesus Himself taught us in Matthew 5:29-30, "If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell." While this is a strong metaphor, it underscores the seriousness of guarding our hearts and removing stumbling blocks, even if it is painful in the moment.

We also want to address the importance of fully surrendering this crush to God. It is clear you have been diligent in prayer, reflection, and self-examination, and we believe God honors that. However, surrender is not just a one-time act, it is a daily, sometimes moment-by-moment, choice to lay down our desires and trust God’s timing. Psalm 37:4-5 encourages us, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act." Notice that the promise is not for God to fulfill our desires as they are, but for Him to shape our desires to align with His will. As you continue to delight in Him, He will either remove this longing or redirect it toward the wife He has prepared for you.

We must also speak to the reality of emotional purity. The temptation to "accidentally" flirt or share too many compliments is a real struggle, and it is important to recognize that these actions, even if unintentional, can create confusion or false hope in others. Ephesians 4:29 reminds us, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." Our words should always build others up in a way that honors God and respects their emotional well-being. If you find yourself struggling in this area, it may be helpful to ask a trusted friend or mentor to hold you accountable in your interactions with her.

Now, let us pray together for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for Your faithfulness and love. We lift up our brother to You, asking that You would continue to work in his life in mighty ways. Lord, we ask that You would break any emotional attachments or desires that are not aligned with Your will. Give him the strength to guard his heart and to surrender this situation fully to You. Father, we pray that You would renew his mind daily, filling him with Your truth and peace. Help him to trust in Your perfect timing and to rest in the knowledge that You have a plan for his life, including the gift of a godly wife when the time is right.

Lord, we ask that You would heal any wounds or unmet needs that may be fueling this crush. Fill him with Your love so completely that he no longer seeks fulfillment in anything or anyone else. Give him wisdom in his interactions with this woman, that he would honor You and her in every word and action. If it is Your will for their friendship to continue, we pray that You would purify his motives and help him to love her as You love her, selflessly and without expectation.

Father, we also pray for the woman who is the object of his affection. Protect her heart, Lord, and surround her with Your peace. If she is unaware of his feelings, we ask that You would shield her from any unintended confusion or hurt. If she is aware, give her the wisdom to navigate this situation with grace and discernment.

Above all, Lord, we pray that You would draw our brother closer to You. Fill him with a deep hunger for Your Word and a passion for Your presence. May he find his identity and worth in You alone, and may he walk in the freedom that comes from complete surrender to Your will. We trust that You are working all things together for his good, and we declare that his future is secure in Your hands.

In the precious and powerful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We want to encourage you to keep pressing into God’s presence. The fact that you are wrestling with this and seeking His will is evidence of His work in your life. Continue to saturate your mind with Scripture, surround yourself with godly community, and remain steadfast in prayer. God is faithful, and He will not leave you to navigate this alone.

Consider also the power of fasting as you seek God’s direction. In Matthew 17:21, Jesus tells us that some things only come out by prayer and fasting. Fasting is a way to humble ourselves before God and demonstrate our dependence on Him. It may be that setting aside time to fast and pray specifically about this situation will bring the clarity and breakthrough you need.

Finally, remember that God’s timing is perfect. It may feel like months have been long, but in the grand story of your life, this season is just a small part of the journey He is leading you on. Trust that He is preparing you for the wife He has for you, just as He is preparing her for you. Until then, focus on becoming the man God has called you to be, a man of integrity, faith, and love. As you do, you will be ready to step into the marriage He has ordained for you, and you will look back on this time with gratitude for how God used it to shape your heart.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
