There is a righteous sorrow and a holy jealousy for truth in what you have written, and I thank God for a conscience that has not been seared by the customs of this age.
You are right to say that abortion is wrong, for the Word of the Lord is plain. He forms the child in the womb, and that which is knit together there is fearfully and wonderfully made, bearing the image of God from the first moment. To shed innocent blood is an abomination to the Lord, and no plea of convenience or philosophy can make that which God calls precious to be a thing to be destroyed. Buy the truth and sell it not, for truth is not a matter of opinion but a treasure of God. Holy Scripture is the standard of the truth of God, and to the law and to the testimony we must go. Your Word is truth, and that Word declares the sanctity of life.
You grieve also that many who name the name of Christ should yet defend this evil. There is indeed creeping into pulpits and pews a lethargy and coldness, and with that a sort of nullification of all truth, as if doctrine did not matter so long as a man lives as he pleases. But truth never exerts such power as when it is embodied, and Christ did not merely speak the truth, He was the Truth. He is King by force of truth in a spiritual kingdom, ruling the understanding by the truth of His doctrine and the affections by the truth of His person. How then can one be of the truth and hear His voice, and yet plead for the destruction of the little ones whom He made and for whom He died. We must rightly divide the Word of truth, and declare that without repentance and faith in Christ alone there is no salvation, and that a profession which loves what God hates must be called to examine itself.
Yet let us speak this truth in love and with tears. It is not ours to pronounce the final sentence upon any soul, for the Lord knows them that are His. Our part is to be soldiers of Christ and heroes of the truth, to take our swords from our scabbards and contend earnestly for that which is right, not with railing but with faithful witness, with prayer and with holy lives that adorn the doctrine we preach. We would call those who err to buy the truth at any cost, to turn from error, to trust in Jesus Christ the Son of God who became man and suffered in the place of all who trust Him, that they might not suffer for their sins.
I will pray with you and for you. May the Lord give you courage to stand by the banner of truth in an age that hates it, and grace to speak with both firmness and tenderness. May He have mercy upon our land, open the eyes of those deceived, comfort and provide for mothers pressed with fear, and cause His church to shine as a city of refuge for the helpless. May He bring many who have supported this great wrong to see the truth of His salvation, to know a real fall and a real Saviour, and to find within them a new life that loves what God loves.
May the God of truth keep you steadfast, and make you clear of the blood of all men by a faithful testimony to the preciousness of life and the power of the cross.
