A prayer over the planet

Disciple of Prayer
Dear God, Thank you for your mercies and forgiveness today, and for the prayers of my fellow Christians - one who told me when I am unsure, "Ask God what to pray for". And I did, and I saw a heart-shaped leaf on my way home near to the tree by our church village community garden, a tree that is dying. And I feel like I am still being asked to pray a prayer for our planet. But my prayers are not eloquent and I am already too hot from a heatwave starting again in ### with no air con in homes or many shops and places. I pray God, please, that it is your will, through your love of all creation, to stop the destruction, pollution and warming of our planet. Please stop the high pressures building and warming our whole world causing heatwaves in all countries. Please, God, make us see and hear and know, make us love and care for our world, for your creation, again. Trees and shrubs and flowers help lower city heat but so many gardens are paved in my neighbourhood. Please make us want to grow something, to care for plants and creatures, for our own health as well as the planets. Please turn all streets in the world into gardens that would make you smile and walk with us during the cool of the day. The heatwaves stop me and many others from enjoying the pinnacle of your creation - summer! Please, Lord, may summer be kind this year, may kind winds prevail, may your love and will prevail, may people just wake up and start planting, start watering, start caretaking nature once more. And through nature, as the enemy well knows and whispers to people of being busy and convenience and tidyness and more, through nature, through gardening, people will come to have their faith in you strengthened and new followers will receive your message. Through caring for your creation, more people will see your fingerprints, your design, and be open to the message, that you are Lord of all. Amen

We hear your heartfelt cry for our planet, and we join you in lifting this burden before the Lord. Your prayer reflects a deep love for God’s creation and a longing for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. The image of the heart-shaped leaf near the dying tree is a beautiful reminder that God speaks to us in the quiet details of His creation, drawing our attention to the things that matter to His heart.

The Bible tells us in Genesis 1:28 that God entrusted humanity with the care of the earth: "God blessed them. God said to them, 'Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.'"
This dominion was never meant to be exploitation but stewardship, a call to nurture, protect, and cultivate the beauty God has given us. The heatwaves, pollution, and destruction we see today are symptoms of a world that has strayed from this calling. Yet, we know that God’s mercy is greater than our failures, and His power is able to restore what has been broken.

We also recognize the spiritual battle at play. The enemy seeks to blind hearts to the truth of God’s design, whispering lies of convenience and distraction to keep people from seeing the beauty of His handiwork. But as Romans 1:20 declares, "For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity, that they may be without excuse." Creation itself testifies to God’s glory, and when we tend to it with love, we participate in that testimony.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, grieving the brokenness of Your creation. We confess that we have not always been faithful stewards of the earth You entrusted to us. Forgive us, Lord, for the ways we have contributed to its harm, whether through neglect, greed, or indifference. We ask for Your mercy to cover the sins of humanity and for Your power to heal the land.

Lord, we pray for an end to the destruction and pollution that plague our planet. Break the strongholds of greed and exploitation that drive the warming of our world. Soften the hearts of leaders, corporations, and individuals to prioritize the care of Your creation over profit and convenience. Let Your Spirit move across the earth, stirring in people a desire to plant, to nurture, and to restore.

Father, we ask for relief from the heatwaves and extreme weather that disrupt life and harm Your creatures. Send Your winds of change, both literal and spiritual, to cool the earth and awaken hearts to their calling as caretakers. May every street, every neighborhood, and every city become a garden that reflects Your beauty and invites Your presence. Let the act of tending to plants and creatures draw people closer to You, revealing Your fingerprints in the design of all things.

We pray for a revival of love for Your creation, Lord. May summer once again be a time of joy and wonder, a season where people can delight in the work of Your hands. Use this crisis to turn hearts back to You, for as Psalm 24:1 reminds us, "The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell therein." You are Lord of all, and we trust in Your power to restore and renew.

Strengthen those who are weary, Lord, especially those suffering in the heat without relief. Provide for their needs and give them hope in Your promises. May Your people lead the way in caring for the earth, demonstrating Your love through action and prayer.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the One through whom all things were created and in whom all things hold together (Colossians 1:16-17). May Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking God’s heart for creation. Your prayers are not in vain, for the Lord hears the cries of His people. Consider how you might personally respond to this call, whether through planting a garden, advocating for environmental stewardship in your community, or simply taking time to marvel at God’s handiwork in nature. Let your actions be a testimony to the love and care God has placed in your heart.

And remember, the earth is the Lord’s, and He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun. Trust in His timing and His power to bring about restoration.

We too have felt the weight of this prayer, remembering how God speaks through His creation in such tender ways, the heart-shaped leaf near that struggling tree reminded us of His love for every detail of this world He crafted. It’s heartbreaking to see the planet groaning under the weight of our carelessness, especially when people are suffering in these relentless heatwaves. It’s in moments like these we realize how much we need God’s intervention, not just for relief from the heat, but for a change of heart in all of us.

Lord, we ask You to move powerfully across this earth, softening hardened hearts and awakening Your people to their role as stewards. Would You stir in each of us a love for the land, the plants, and the creatures You’ve placed in our care? Help us see that when we plant, tend, and heal, we’re not just doing good, we’re pointing others back to You. Let summer once again be a season of joy and wonder, where Your fingerprints are evident in every green leaf and cool breeze, drawing people closer to You in awe and worship.

In the healing name of Jesus, we pray.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Thank you for your prayer - and when able on this site, I will thank others. This morning's news about the heatwave in ### has gotten worse. Now not a week of just 30C but a week of potentially 33-35C coming. We have no air con. We have no shutters. We can't get those things in most old houses in the UK. We are not built as a city to withstand these temperatures. I am frightened. I am worried for my health with allergies and breathing, and the potential rising humidity, along with other challenges I am facing in my life right now - grief for a my brother's death and fear of the hostility of my inlaws and devastation from the unkindness of my husband - it feels like my back will break at some point. And others in my community who are more vulnerable that I, the elderly, are so worried about next week's heatwave, if they will live through it. So I wonder why God allows it. I wonder why God allows the climate change and destruction to continue. I wonder why God allows arrows to continue to fall on my little family that was, in truth, a family that came as a gift from Him. Then a church woman told me: He asks us to ask Him what to pray for. And the answer comes to me that He asks me to pray for strength to get through this time, that it must be difficult and I must pray for healing and strength so it doesn't effect me, and to pray for trust, that I trust his timing and wisdom in all things. And I think He also asks me to pray your prayer - that everyone in the world will realise, when the heat gets too much, that they need to wake up, stop being greedy and convenient, and save our planet, and care for our world. Thank you for your prayer. I have said it this morning. And I will say the others below one at a time each day this week. Thank you prayer warriors!
