A poison gospel

"God is a God of love, but Hes also a God over justice".We have coming out more these days certain ones who claim Christianity who emphasize one aspect of God while xing out another.Sometimes they deny hell."A loving God would never send anyone to hell..The sinner just ceases to exist"But we read otherwise."""There will be weeping and nashing of death"People who dont exist weep and nash their teeth? In Revelation we read of the antichrist and false prophet.Thrown into the lake of fire "and they will be torment ed day and not forever and ever".Nonexistent people dont feel torment. And the rich mant and Lazurus. Then some go further to instead of love to seeming "give a pass to"people actively rebelling against God homozexuals etc."God loves everyonde:But they misconstrue love with approval. This is more becoming a way of thinking and is even sidetracked some who claim Christianity."But He is also a God of judgement"has been omitted.

We hear the burden in your words and we join with you in grieving over this poisoned gospel that is spreading, and we agree that it is a dangerous half truth to preach the love of God while cutting out His holiness, justice and judgment.

You are right to call this out. Scripture never presents love and justice as opposing attributes that cancel each other, they are both perfect and inseparable in His character. Psalm 89:14 tells us Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face. And Nahum 1:3 reminds us Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. A God who would simply overlook unrepented sin would not be loving, He would not be just, and He would not be holy.

We also affirm with you that hell is real, conscious and eternal, not annihilation. The idea that the wicked simply cease to exist is directly contradicted by Jesus Himself. He said in Matthew 13:42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. As you said, those who do not exist do not weep and gnash their teeth. He also said in Matthew 25:46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. Eternal means eternal. In the account of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:23-24 the rich man being in torment in Hades lifts up his eyes and cries out for mercy, he is conscious, he remembers, he suffers. And concerning the beast and the false prophet Revelation 20:10 says The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. And Revelation 14:11 adds The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. Nonexistent people do not feel torment day and night forever and ever.

We also stand with you concerning the twisting of love into approval, especially regarding homosexuality and other active rebellion against God. The world and even some who claim the name Christian now say God loves everyone so He accepts everyone as they are. That misconstrues love. God does love the world, John 3:16 says For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life, and Romans 5:8 says God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. His love moved Him to provide a way of salvation while we were still in sin, but His love never affirms sin. True love warns, convicts and calls to repentance. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 is clear Or don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God's Kingdom? Don't be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God's Kingdom. And Romans 1:26-27 describes homosexual acts as dishonorable passions contrary to nature. Yet the very next verse in 1 Corinthians 6:11 gives hope, Such were some of you, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God. God loves the sinner enough to call us out of sin, not to leave us in it. We believe marriage is holy and is the lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and any sexual activity outside of that marriage, whether fornication, adultery or homosexuality, is sin that must be repented of, not celebrated.

We also notice your request speaks much of God but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly address this because there is no access to the Father and no salvation apart from Him. The justice of God and the love of God meet at the cross of Christ. The wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Without Jesus bearing the judgment we deserve, we would all face that eternal punishment. It is only through repentance and faith in Jesus that we are saved from the wrath to come, for 2 Peter 3:9 tells us The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

So we pray together now.

Father in heaven, we come before Your throne in the mighty name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we thank You that You are both perfect love and perfect justice, merciful and holy, patient and righteous. We ask You to forgive us for the times we have softened Your truth to make it more palatable. We ask You to expose and rebuke this poisoned gospel that denies hell, that teaches annihilation, that twists love into approval of sin, and that omits judgment. Open the eyes of those who are being led astray, and give courage to pastors and believers to preach the whole counsel of Your word with grace and truth. Bring deep conviction of sin and a true understanding that hell is eternal conscious torment from which only Jesus can save. Draw those living in sexual immorality, including homosexuality, to repentance, wash them and sanctify them by the blood of Jesus, and restore them to purity and to marriages that honor You. Help us to love as You love, not by affirming what You call sin, but by speaking the truth in love and pointing all to the cross where Your love and justice kissed. Keep us from being sidetracked, make us bold witnesses of the true gospel, and let many be saved before the day of judgment comes. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We hear the weight in what you shared, and we appreciate your care for truth when it feels like parts of who God is are being left out.

What you are describing is something we see often, that tendency to put God into one file or the other, either only love or only judgment, and then filter out anything that does not fit that picture. When that happens the whole character of God gets flattened, and love starts to be confused with approval. It helps to name that, because it keeps us from getting swept up trying to argue each new claim and instead steadies us to look for the fuller, balanced picture of who He has revealed Himself to be.

It is discouraging to watch this thinking spread, especially among those who name Christ, and it makes sense you would feel grieved. Staying grounded in a faithful local church where both grace and truth are held together, and taking time to test what you hear by its fruit over time, can be a quiet way to guard your own heart without carrying the burden of correcting everyone around you.

We are praying for you to have continued clarity and peace as you walk this out.

Father, we lift our brother to You and ask You to keep him rooted in Your whole truth and close to You. Give him discernment, steady hope, and fellowship that encourages him, and draw those who are being misled into a true knowledge of Your love and Your justice. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your letter shows a clear discernment which is itself a gift of God, for you have perceived how the truth is mangled when men take one attribute of the Most High and set it against another.

There is indeed a poison in that gospel which preaches a God all love and no justice, or all justice and no mercy. Holy Scripture presents no such divided Deity. Your Word is Truth, and that Word declares that God is love, and that He will by no means clear the guilty. At Calvary we see how these perfections meet without jar or contradiction. Justice demanded punishment for sin, and love provided the Substitute. He went up to the accursed tree and freely gave Himself up to die, so that in that death the Justice of God might be vindicated and that God might be just, and yet the Justifier of him that believes in Jesus. To deny either is to deny the cross itself.

You are right to reject the vain notion that the wicked merely cease to exist. Our Lord Himself has said there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, and what is this but conscious sorrow and pain. In Revelation we read of the lake of fire where torment is day and night forever and ever, and in the account of the rich man and Lazarus we see a man awake, remembering, thirsting, and in anguish. Nonexistent men do not weep, nor do they feel torment, nor do they plead for a drop of water. When the Holy Ghost convinces the soul, that soul feels most solemnly that hell itself is but a rightful punishment for sin, and confesses that God is just in His sentence. Let no man teach you otherwise, for to nullify hell is to nullify the very need of a Saviour.

And you have judged rightly also concerning that false love which gives a pass to what God calls sin. It is a grave error at the root of much modern preaching, a lethargy creeping into pulpits which would make love to mean approval. The love of God does not approve rebellion, whether it be theft, or falsehood, or adultery, or the practice of homosexuality, or any other departure from His holy law. God loves sinners and commands all men everywhere to repent, but He has appointed marriage to be the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that alone is the place for the union of the sexes and for living together as husband and wife. To live otherwise is to live outside His revealed will. True love therefore does not flatter the sinner in his sin, but tells him the whole truth, and points him to the Physician. They that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick, and Christ came to save such.

Buy the truth and sell it not. Buy all the truth, doctrinal truth from the Scriptures, experimental truth wrought in the heart by the Spirit, and practical truth lived out in holiness. There is no place where truth can be found in its power and life except in Jesus Christ. This war between right and wrong must be continued and never must cease until truth has the victory. Be valiant for God and for His truth, and fear not man.

I will pray that the Lord will keep you steadfast, that He will strengthen your faith to trust Him in the storm, that He will make you to know the truth so certainly that you are able to remember it just when you most need it, and that He will use you to publish that blessed truth around you, that sinners of every kind, being convicted of sin and of judgment, may flee to Christ alone for salvation and find mercy. For Justice itself, once satisfied by the blood of Christ, now pleads for the repenting sinner, and God can be just and yet forgive all who come to Him through His Son.
