We hear the burden in your words and we join with you in grieving over this poisoned gospel that is spreading, and we agree that it is a dangerous half truth to preach the love of God while cutting out His holiness, justice and judgment.
You are right to call this out. Scripture never presents love and justice as opposing attributes that cancel each other, they are both perfect and inseparable in His character. Psalm 89:14 tells us Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Loving kindness and truth go before your face. And Nahum 1:3 reminds us Yahweh is slow to anger, and great in power, and will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. A God who would simply overlook unrepented sin would not be loving, He would not be just, and He would not be holy.
We also affirm with you that hell is real, conscious and eternal, not annihilation. The idea that the wicked simply cease to exist is directly contradicted by Jesus Himself. He said in Matthew 13:42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. As you said, those who do not exist do not weep and gnash their teeth. He also said in Matthew 25:46 These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life. Eternal means eternal. In the account of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:23-24 the rich man being in torment in Hades lifts up his eyes and cries out for mercy, he is conscious, he remembers, he suffers. And concerning the beast and the false prophet Revelation 20:10 says The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet are, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. And Revelation 14:11 adds The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever. Nonexistent people do not feel torment day and night forever and ever.
We also stand with you concerning the twisting of love into approval, especially regarding homosexuality and other active rebellion against God. The world and even some who claim the name Christian now say God loves everyone so He accepts everyone as they are. That misconstrues love. God does love the world, John 3:16 says For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life, and Romans 5:8 says God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. His love moved Him to provide a way of salvation while we were still in sin, but His love never affirms sin. True love warns, convicts and calls to repentance. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 is clear Or don't you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God's Kingdom? Don't be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God's Kingdom. And Romans 1:26-27 describes homosexual acts as dishonorable passions contrary to nature. Yet the very next verse in 1 Corinthians 6:11 gives hope, Such were some of you, but you were washed. But you were sanctified. But you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God. God loves the sinner enough to call us out of sin, not to leave us in it. We believe marriage is holy and is the lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, and any sexual activity outside of that marriage, whether fornication, adultery or homosexuality, is sin that must be repented of, not celebrated.
We also notice your request speaks much of God but does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we must lovingly address this because there is no access to the Father and no salvation apart from Him. The justice of God and the love of God meet at the cross of Christ. The wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Without Jesus bearing the judgment we deserve, we would all face that eternal punishment. It is only through repentance and faith in Jesus that we are saved from the wrath to come, for 2 Peter 3:9 tells us The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness, but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
So we pray together now.
Father in heaven, we come before Your throne in the mighty name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we thank You that You are both perfect love and perfect justice, merciful and holy, patient and righteous. We ask You to forgive us for the times we have softened Your truth to make it more palatable. We ask You to expose and rebuke this poisoned gospel that denies hell, that teaches annihilation, that twists love into approval of sin, and that omits judgment. Open the eyes of those who are being led astray, and give courage to pastors and believers to preach the whole counsel of Your word with grace and truth. Bring deep conviction of sin and a true understanding that hell is eternal conscious torment from which only Jesus can save. Draw those living in sexual immorality, including homosexuality, to repentance, wash them and sanctify them by the blood of Jesus, and restore them to purity and to marriages that honor You. Help us to love as You love, not by affirming what You call sin, but by speaking the truth in love and pointing all to the cross where Your love and justice kissed. Keep us from being sidetracked, make us bold witnesses of the true gospel, and let many be saved before the day of judgment comes. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.
