Your prayer has been heard and we have brought it before the Lord with you in our own prayers. To live hand to mouth and to feel life grey and weary is a heavy burden, and the longing for a little breathing space, for a walk by the sea or among the hills, is natural to the soul that labours under such a weight.
Hear the word of the Lord Jesus, who says, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. This is a present rest, rest now, not only rest after death, and it is a perfect rest for the soul that comes to Him. There is also a further rest which is found as we learn of Him and take His yoke upon us, the rest of a learner who walks day by day with Christ.
It is a vain idea to suppose that if our circumstances were only altered we should be more at rest. If you cannot rest in poverty, neither would you in riches, and if you cannot rest in obscurity, neither would you in honour. The rest which Christ gives is not dependent upon a full purse or a fair landscape, though we may thank Him for those mercies when He grants them. You are very poor, as you say, but if you set small store by riches, poverty will not distress you as it does the world, for faith teaches contentment and perfect satisfaction with our earthly lot as from the hand of our Father.
This does not make your need less real, and we do not lightly pass over it. The Lord knows that you have less than a little to live upon this week, and He who feeds the sparrows and clothes the lilies knows your frame and your need. We have prayed that He would deal bountifully with you, that He would give you in His providence some refreshing of body and mind, whether it be a quiet day out or some other token of His care, as seems good to Him, and above all that He would give you rest of mind, fixedness of belief, and peace in every part of your nature, that deep and true rest which the world cannot give and cannot take away.
There remaineth also a rest to the people of God which is yet to come, a perfect rest where there are no more grey days and no more anxious toil, where the soul is wholly at rest in its home. That hope is sure for all who trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, for we who have believed do enter into rest. Trust and you shall rest, and though you have had many defeats and weary miles, victory is secured in Christ.
May the Lord turn your present hope into a settled confidence through believing in Jesus, and may He enable you to say with the Psalmist, Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee. We will continue to keep you in prayer, asking the Lord to supply your daily bread, to lift the greyness with the light of His countenance, and to keep your faith looking to Him till the better day He has promised shall dawn.
