You do well to bring your roommate before the throne of grace, and I do not forbid your prayers for her. But what did I say in the homilies? Christ grants healing to the faith of others, yes, as with the centurion’s servant, but only when there is no unbelief in the one who lies sick. Your friend, by her own lips, declares it is too late. That is a wall she builds against the mercy of God. You cannot tear it down by your pleading alone; she must herself arise and cast it down. When we sleep, the help of others profits nothing, even the prayers of the saints. Wake her, then! Do not let her slumber in this despair and imagine your intercession will carry her while she folds her arms in unbelief.

You remind her of the prophet’s word, “By his stripes we are healed.” Good. But what is a promise if the hearer refuses to believe it? She answers that she does not have to claim what the doctors affirm. That is not faith but contradiction. Faith does not deny the report of the physician; it lifts its eyes higher and says, “Even so, God is able.” The evil one would have her believe that because death came before, it must come again. But I ask you, is God bound by what happened to her family? Does He lack power because her eyes have seen loss? Nothing is too hard for the Lord, but nothing is given to the one who will not stretch out a hand to receive it. She is like that father in Scripture who cried, “Help my unbelief!” He did not stand aloof, claiming impossibility; he confessed the weakness and yet begged for help. That is the cry that moves heaven.

Therefore, do not stop praying, prayer is a great weapon, and I have urged you to pray at dawn and by night as you go into the battles of each day. But let your prayer be joined with instruction. Tell her plainly: “If you continue to speak of ‘too late,’ you are not waiting on God; you are dictating to Him. You make yourself the judge of what He can do.” It would be a bitter mercy to her soul if, while you seek the healing of her body, her heart remains in rebellion. She must not despise the hope set before her, nor treat Christ’s power as if it had expired. Did He not show that He needs no prayer to work a miracle? Yet He prayed for the sake of the bystanders, to draw them to faith. So I say to you: do not make prayer a substitute for her own awakening. If she will not believe, your prayers alone will not suffice, for she still lies in the sleep of unbelief, and that sleep drowns the ship.

Continue to keep her at the throne, but speak to her with the sharpness of love. Remind her that many who seemed insensible for a long time later brought forth fruit at a single word. The root may yet be alive. Do not grow weary. But let your agreement in prayer be an agreement that she will at least say, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”, not a stubborn wall of “It is too late.” For if she persists in that, she adds to her affliction the sin of charging God with weakness. May the Lord awaken her, and may you be the voice that calls her out of the tomb of despair, as Lazarus heard the voice of his friend.

What a faithful friend you are to carry your roommate to the throne of grace day after day. The compulsion to pray and to stand on the promises of God’s healing is a beautiful thing, and the desire for two of you to agree together on this miraculous healing echoes the very heart of Jesus. He told us that if two on earth agree about anything they ask, it will be done by the Father in heaven. So your instinct to seek agreement is right and good.

It sounds like your roommate is wrestling not just with a diagnosis but with deep layers of memory and pain. When she answers that it is too late because she has already lost family members through this same illness, that is a soul crying out beneath a heavy load of grief and fear. The report she is hearing from the doctors is being amplified by the report of her own heartbreak. Yes, Scripture asks, “Whose report will you believe?” and you have reminded her that we are to believe the Lord’s report. But for someone whose eyes are fixed on a casket rather than on the Healer, unbelief becomes a real barrier, not because God cannot act, but because our own hearts can limit what we receive from His hand. Even Jesus marveled at the unbelief of those who knew Him best, and He did not do many mighty works there because of it.

Yet this does not mean hope is lost. Think of the blind man whom Jesus touched, who at first saw men as trees walking. His healing was gradual. It was the only such miracle recorded, and it shows us that sometimes the Lord works in stages. Healing can be a process. Sometimes He touches a person’s emotions, bringing wholeness to the inner wounds before the body aligns. Your friend’s long-held grief may be the first place God wants to bring His healing balm. It may be that as her heart begins to know Him as the Comforter, her faith will rise to receive Him as Jehovah Rapha, the Lord her healer.

Keep bringing her name before the Lord. The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous person avails much. Not because you have achieved some special rank, but because you are standing in the gap with a sincere heart, praying in harmony with God’s purposes. When you continue in prayer and watch with thanksgiving, you are not trying to twist God’s arm. Prayer opens the door for Him to do what He already desires to do, without violating the free will and heart of the one being prayed for. So your persistence is powerful. Do not give up.

At the same time, be gentle with her resistance. Faith cannot be argued into someone; it is born as we encounter Jesus. Instead of pressing her to “not claim the report,” perhaps walk with her into the Psalms, where the hurting soul poured out its honest sorrow and yet turned again to trust. Pray that God would open her eyes, not just to a principle, but to Himself. And trust that even now, a healing of the mind and spirit may be happening in ways you cannot yet see.

We can agree together right now. Lord Jesus, You are the Healer. Nothing is too hard for You. Touch this dear woman with Your power, heal her body, break the chains of past loss, and give her a revelation of Your goodness. Let her know that in You, even the valley of the shadow of death becomes a place of Your presence. We ask for a miracle, but we also ask for Your perfect will, and we thank You that Your grace is always sufficient. Amen.

Keep praying, keep loving, and keep trusting. The Lord hears. He is at work even in the silence.

We are so grateful you entrusted us with the privilege of standing in agreement with you for your roommate’s healing. It has been on our hearts to lift her before the Throne of Grace daily, declaring that by His stripes she is healed and reminding heaven that nothing is too hard for our God. We have prayed specifically for Jehovah Rapha to move mightily in her life, breaking through fear and doubt with the truth of His Word.

If the Lord has already touched her with His healing power, we would be overjoyed to hear a praise report so we can rejoice together in His faithfulness. If the battle still rages, we want to continue standing with you in prayer—interceding for her complete restoration, renewed faith, and the peace that comes from trusting in God’s perfect timing and plan.

Please let us know how we can keep praying. We remain committed to agreeing with you in faith, believing that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think. May He strengthen your heart and hers as you both seek Him through Jesus Christ our Lord. We pray this in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
