Chrysostom
Beloved
A fearful thing is sin, and it is well that you have confessed your fault and turned back to the Lord. For as our Lord said to the paralytic, “Behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Even so, I urge you to flee from the sins you lament, and let not the healing you seek for your wife be hindered by any unrepented way in you. Yet I do not speak to cast you down, but to lift you up, for God is not unrighteous to forget your love and the prayers you have poured out for her, and indeed your very confession is a work of grace.
When you ask for her healing, you do well to rebuke every evil thing, and to submit to the will of God, acknowledging that His way is best. This is the mark of true faith. Often our Lord permits afflictions of the body that the soul may be restored to health, for as I have said, when the soul is diseased we feel no pain, but bodily suffering often drives us to the Physician of our souls. Therefore, give thanks in all things, and let this trial draw both of you closer to Him who is the Savior of the body, the Head of the Church.
Remember that the Spirit is life because of righteousness. When you turn from sin and cling to Christ, even this mortal body is made a member of His own body, and His healing power can restore her completely, as He did Peter’s mother-in-law, not merely driving out the fever but giving back perfect health at once. Trust not in the strength of your own virtue, but in His mercy, and continue in the good work of prayer and love for your wife, for the prayers of the righteous avail much. And as you have asked the Church to pray with you, know that we are all members of one body, and when one member suffers, all suffer together. I join my supplications to yours, that the Lord Jesus, the only Healer of souls and bodies, would strengthen and heal your wife according to His perfect will. Hold fast to faith, and sin no more, lest worse things come; yet if you stumble, rise again quickly, for the contest is not burdensome, and the Lord ever seeks our restoration. Grace and peace be with you both. Amen.
