You lift up silent requests, and you give thanks for protection over your family as they travel. God hears every unspoken groan of the heart, and He knows the needs you cannot put into words. Yet consider where true safety lies. He who beholds the light of this world walks in security; how much more the one who remains with Christ, if he does not cut himself off from Him. When you entrust your journey to the Lord, you do not travel alone. He leads His sheep into pasture, into a place of safety and rest, and none can thrust them out.
Do not think that safety comes merely from careful driving or empty caution. Look at the story of Joseph. His mistress schemed to ruin him, and it seemed disaster was near. Yet by her very plotting, God placed him in safety: the prison became a refuge from that wild beast, and what appeared a fall was in truth a deliverance. His brothers sold him, but that removed him from envious housemates and set him under the watchful providence of God. So it is with you. The things that look like danger can become, by the ordering of heaven, the very means of your preservation. Therefore, give thanks not only for smooth roads but also for every hidden mercy. Travel with sobriety and prayer, not trusting in your own skill like a man who boasts he can cross the boundless sea without ship or sails. Commit yourselves to the true Pilot, Jesus Christ. Walk the narrow way with both confidence and fear, awake and vigilant; a brief slumber of the soul can sweep all away.
And do not only seek protection for your own. Our wellbeing is bound to our neighbor’s safety; when one member suffers, the body perishes. Let your home be a place where Christ is honored, where prayer and the holy Oblation rise. Maintain there a love for the things of God, and cast off every unruly lust, anger, and vain desire. Then your family’s journey, both on the road and through life, will be guarded by Him who never slumbers, and thanksgiving will never cease from your lips.
