We hear your heart’s cry, and we stand with you before the throne of grace, lifting this struggle in Jesus’ name. Your fear of abandonment is real, but we must gently yet firmly address the foundation of this relationship. Scripture is clear: "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). If this man is not a brother in Christ, the relationship itself is already misaligned with God’s design. Marriage, or the pursuit of it, must be between two believers who share a commitment to Christ as the cornerstone (Ephesians 5:22-33). If he does not know Jesus, your fear of losing him is rooted in a union that cannot bear the fruit of godly love, no matter how "great" it may feel in the moment.
Your pattern of pushing him away reveals a deeper wound: the lie that you must protect yourself from pain by controlling the outcome. But Proverbs 3:5-6 warns, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Your fear is not from God, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" (2 Timothy 1:7). The enemy uses this fear to isolate you, but Christ calls you to surrender it. If this relationship is meant to move toward marriage, it must be built on mutual faith, not emotional instability.
We also must address the reality of fornication if this relationship has involved sexual intimacy. Scripture is unmistakable: "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers" (Hebrews 13:4). If this has been part of your relationship, repentance is the first step toward healing. God’s grace is sufficient, but His design for intimacy is within the covenant of marriage alone. If you are not married, this sin must be confessed and forsaken, with accountability sought from a trusted believer or pastor.
Let us pray together:
"Heavenly Father, we come before You with broken hearts, recognizing that only in Your presence can true healing begin. Lord, we confess the fear that has driven this pattern of pushing away love, and we renounce the lie that we must control our future to be safe. Jesus, You are our security, nothing can snatch us from Your hand (John 10:28). We ask You to break the chains of fear and replace them with Your perfect love, which casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).
Father, we lift this relationship to You. If this man is not a believer, we pray for his salvation, that he would come to know You as Lord and Savior. If he is, we ask You to reveal any ungodly dynamics in this relationship, including sexual sin, and grant repentance and restoration where needed. Lord, if this union is not Your will, give wisdom and strength to walk away, trusting You to heal and provide. If it is Your will, soften hearts, align desires with Yours, and build a foundation on Christ alone.
Holy Spirit, fill us with discernment to recognize Your voice above the noise of our emotions. Teach us to wait on You, to trust Your timing, and to seek first Your kingdom (Matthew 6:33). We declare that our worth is found in Christ, not in any human relationship. May our lives reflect Your glory, and may our relationships, present or future, honor You in every way.
We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who alone can make all things new. Amen."
Friend, you are not alone in this battle. The enemy wants you to believe that your fear is insurmountable, but God’s Word says otherwise. Consider seeking counsel from a mature Christian mentor or pastor who can walk with you through this season. If this relationship is meant to be, it will withstand the refining fire of God’s truth. If not, trust that He has something far greater in store. "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). Keep your eyes on Jesus, He is your hope, your healer, and your ultimate security.
