It is often said that the old was a covenant of works, while the new is a covenant of grace.
31. The LORD says, "The time is coming when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.
32. It will not be like the old covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand and led them out of Egypt. Although I was like a husband to them, they did not keep that covenant.
33. The new covenant that I will make with the people of Israel will be this: I will put my law within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.
Jeremiah 31:31-33

"The old system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship."
Hebrews 10:1

The old was found with fault.

“For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.”
Hebrews 8:7

The Old Covenant has been surpassed and replaced by the New Covenant. The old had limited access to God through an imperfect mediator but the new order grant's direct access to God through a perfect and eternal Mediator.

"By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear."
Hebrews 8:13
  • A change of covenants was forecasted Hebrews 7:12 and 7:22-27, and the above highlighted verse
  • The old covenant was a preparation for the coming of Christ and a shadow of things to come.
    Galatians 3:24-25
  • The old covenant (the law of Moses) did not have the means to take away sin.
    Hebrews 10:3-4
  • In this way, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant. Hebrews 7:22
  • Jesus is superior to Moses as a mediator.
    Hebrews 8:6
  • Jesus is a high priest forever, seated next to God in heaven. He lives forever so His Priestly leadership is eternal.
    Hebrews 6:20 and 7:24
  • Jesus' sacrifice was once for all, perfecting believers for eternal life.
  • Christ's death was the atonement for sin/ God's purpose.
    Hebrews Acts 2:23-24
We are aware of this new covenant and our new Mediator but are we still entrenched in the old practices. Do we worship in Truth and in Love or do we let our actions be filtered by the letter of the law? Are we fuelled by revenge or do we govern ourselves with forgiveness. The scriptures from the old testament holds plenty of rich teachings but our new testament is about His grace redeeming us. It's a free gift for us to seize. We have a better covenant, a better Mediator, and a better promise. The old covenant (or old treaty if you will) is dead and no longer in effect.

We obey His commandments for it's written in our hearts.

Holy Spirit come and flow through me so I can understand Your word and believe and follow You all the way to heaven. It is Jesus who will teach us all things and He will give us wisdom from heaven to understand the eternal word of God in our hearts.
