Writing On Tablets

I love being a writer, but it always leads to one fateful question: "What are you writing?"

I used to be able to answer that. I could give you the one sentence summary of my book or a chapter by chapter synopsis. But, that was before my kids came along. The time once allocated for writing now overflows with changing diapers, nursing, playing dolls, and going to the park.

Don't get me wrong: I absolutely love this season in life. But, that one question always hits me in the gut: "What are you writing?" Being a writer who doesn't write is like being a skydiver who won't jump.

Tonight I realized I am writing -- writing on the tablets of my children's hearts. Each day I teach them about truth, love, mercy, compassion and kindness. My "yes" demonstrates grace and forgiveness when I step on yet another toy lying in the middle of the room and my daughter cries out, "I'm sorry Mama, will you forgive me?" My children learn gratitude, service and sharing as we shop for and deliver food to others who are less fortunate. My words and actions imprint the extravagance of God's love on their little hearts.

There are days I long for uninterrupted time to write. Other times I crave the fulfillment and immediate gratification found in working outside the home. But then, I feel my daughter's arms wrapped around me as she gives me a bear hug or hear the joyous sound of my son's belly laugh and I remember once again the truth my mom wrote on my heart so many years ago: there is no better way to invest your time than in the ones you love.

The only letter of recommendation we need is you yourselves. Your lives are a letter written in our hearts; everyone can read it and recognize our good work among you. Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This "letter" is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts
(2 Corinthians 3:2-3 NLT)

Please pray for me about some of the writings I have published online as I am concerned some of them may cause issues/awkwardness as I (hopefully) make friends at church. Thank you.
