Wrath to my enemies

Jehu, the Swift Driver
Reckless living in worldly or spiritual matters endangers yourself and others and demands an immediate change of course.

All people share one divine origin and this calls us to see every person as family.
Reminiscences
Reflecting on life’s joys and sorrows reveals God’s faithfulness and calls you to gratitude and renewed devotion.
We hear the pain and anger behind your request and we want to come alongside you in prayer, yet we must lovingly rebuke the spirit of this prayer because it does not align with the heart of God.

To ask for wrath, sickness and curses to backfire upon your enemies is to ask us to agree with vengeance, and scripture clearly calls us away from that path. We are told in Romans 12:19, Don't seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord. And again in Romans 12:21, Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. The Lord does see injustice and He is perfectly just, but He has not given us the place to call down sickness or destruction upon others.

Jesus Himself commands us to a higher way when He says in Matthew 5:44, But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, and in Luke 6:28, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. We are also warned in Proverbs 24:17, Don't rejoice when your enemy falls. Don't let your heart be glad when he is overthrown, and in Romans 12:14, Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don't curse. A return to sender prayer seeks harm for others, but God calls us to seek their good, even their salvation, and to trust Him to deal righteously with all wrongdoing.

We also notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Apart from Jesus we have no standing before God, and it is only by His blood that we can bring our hurts and our needs and find grace.

So together we choose to pray differently than what was asked, seeking God's will and not our own anger.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one who is hurting and feeling attacked. You see every wound and every enemy and every sickness that has caused pain, and we ask You to bring healing and peace where there has been bitterness. Forgive us for the times we have desired revenge in our hearts, and create in us a clean heart that can love as You love. We pray that You would soften our hearts to forgive as You have forgiven us, and we pray also for those who are considered enemies, that You would have mercy on them, open their eyes to truth, and draw them to repentance and salvation in Jesus. Let no sickness be celebrated, but let Your healing and Your justice prevail according to Your perfect wisdom. Help us to release vengeance into Your hands and to overcome evil with good, trusting that You will repay with righteousness. Lead this dear one into deeper faith in Jesus, that they may know Him as Savior and Lord and find rest and protection in Him. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We encourage you to release this burden of wrath to the Lord and to ask Him to replace it with His love and peace. Spend time in His Word, bring your pain honestly to Him, and choose to pray blessings and salvation for those who have hurt you, for that is what transforms both them and us and brings freedom to our own hearts.

We hear how much hurt is behind your words, and we are standing with you in prayer. Wanting those who have wounded you to feel the same pain is a very human response when the wound cuts deep.

When we are wronged we often carry what counselors call an injustice gap, the space between what we wish had happened and what actually did. Anger in that gap is a powerful God given emotion, but when it settles into resentment and a desire to get even, it tends to eat at our own hearts more than it changes anyone else. There is a difference between making a quiet decision to release the pursuit of revenge, and the slower work of the heart finding peace. Both take time and both can happen gradually.

One simple step that has helped many people is to honestly name the hurt before God just as it is, telling Him you want to hand over the right to pay back, even while the feelings are still raw and have not yet caught up. If you have a trusted pastor or counselor you can talk with, sharing the story with one safe person can also lighten the burden as you walk this out.

Father, in Jesus name we lift our friend to You. You see the pain and the sickness and the wrong that has been felt. We ask for Your healing, for wisdom and for a heart that can find rest in Your care. Guard our friend from bitterness and lead in the way of peace. Give strength for each next step and let Your will be done. Amen.

The pain and sense of being wronged that breathes in your words is heard before the Lord, and it is right to bring such burning feelings into His presence rather than to act upon them. Yet the prayer you have framed, to call wrath and sickness upon others and to ask that it return upon them, is not a prayer which Scripture teaches us to pray, and it cannot be asked in the name of Christ.

The Word declares, He will abundantly pardon, for as high as the heavens are above the earth, so are His ways higher than your ways. We forgive and yet feel some return of anger. We forgive and mean it, but there are times when we get to chewing over the old offense and we feel grieved again. The offense sticks in our throat, it floats up again, though we thought we had drowned it. This is our weakness. But our God is not so. He is greater at forgiving than you ever dreamed. Oh, He is a great forgiver. Wonderful is God in every position which He assumes, but when He takes to pardoning through the bleeding Sacrifice, then is He glorious indeed.

You speak of vengeance, and Scripture does speak of the day of vengeance of our God. Does not the sound of vengeance grate upon your ears. That day is real, but observe, the day of vengeance is in His heart, and the year of His redeemed is come. Vengeance belongs unto the Lord, not unto His people. He has said, I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely, for My anger is turned away from them. If the day of vengeance took place when our Lord died, then for those who are in Christ it is over, for He bore the wrath in our stead. For those who obey not the Gospel, that day remains with God alone to appoint.

Our calling is of another kind. We have been taught that saints first learn the art of overcoming evil and then they learn the way to overcome goodness too. This morning our subject was overcoming evil with good, and here there is much for us to do, and more than we can do apart from Divine Grace. Yet the weapons of this battle are not cursing but blessing, not returning sickness but seeking mercy. Our Lord who kept not His life from the cross prayed for His enemies gathered about it, and He bids us do the same.

Therefore let us pray otherwise together. May the Holy Spirit sweetly open up to us the glories of our sin forgiving God and cause us to exult in the riches of His Grace. May He who is able to keep us from falling keep your heart from being overcome by bitterness, and enable you to carry the war into the enemy's country by being more than conqueror through Him that loved us. May the Lord turn away all desire for revenge in us, give us a forgiving spirit even as we have been forgiven through the matchless Atonement which covers all our guilt, and teach us to pray for those who have harmed us, that they also may come to salvation through Jesus Christ alone and know that His anger is turned away and He comforts them.

If any guilt lies upon your own conscience for anger cherished, go as soon as you are sensible of a fault and admit it before the Lord, asking pardon from Him for Jesus sake, and you shall find Him abundantly pardoning. Bring your wounds to Him and ask Him to heal your heart, to give you peace, and to let no root of bitterness remain.

We have received your request and we hear the deep hurt and anger behind it. When we have been wounded by others it is natural to want them to feel the same pain, but the way of Christ calls us to something different, and for that reason we cannot pray as you have asked, for God to send wrath or sickness back upon your enemies.

Scripture commands us to pray for our enemies, not against them, and to pray not only for the faithful but also for the unbelieving. To ask God to smite or to recompense evil upon another with words like show him the same or let sickness be upon him is far from the disciple of Christ, who is called to be meek and mild. Such prayers do not harm the enemy so much as they harm the one who prays, because they provoke God and pollute the mouth that has been made for prayer and thanksgiving. The apostle warns that revilers shall not inherit the kingdom of God, and how much more serious is it when cursing and prayer, which are wide apart, are mixed together.

We are taught to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other even as God in Christ forgave us. We are to imitate God, who makes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust. If you forgive at this moment, you forgive a fellow servant, while God has forgiven you, His servant, far more. The Lord also says, forgive and you shall be forgiven, and if you forgive not, you shall not be forgiven. To ask God not to forgive, but to take vengeance, is to close the door on the very mercy we ourselves need every day.

Vengeance belongs to the Lord, and He says, I will repay. It is not for us to call down wrath, but to leave judgment in His hands, trusting that He lives and sees and will do what is just. He is working to remove what destroys love and to bring us together, for love is the root of all good, and He who created us loves us more than any father or mother or friend.

So instead we will pray with you in the way Christ taught. We pray that God would heal your heart from anger and give you grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, that He would bring you peace and thanksgiving even in this trial, that He would have mercy on those who have harmed you and lead them to repentance and to knowledge of Jesus Christ, and that if there is sickness, He would bring healing and not add affliction to anyone. We pray that you would be kept pure in speech and in prayer, and that God would be your defender and comforter.

If you are willing, release your enemies into Gods hands and ask Him to bless them with the same mercy you desire for yourself, for in doing so you imitate your Father in heaven.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
