You long for tranquility, and rightfully so, for the war raging within you is the most perilous of all battles. When the soul is at variance with itself, tossed by waves of anxiety and the dread of what might befall your home, there is no outward calm that can truly shelter you. The devil whips us with far harsher stripes than any earthly master, lashing our minds into a frenzy of fear, and this is the very slavery from which Christ came to set us free.
Do you see the root of this burden? It lies in too great a trust in your own thoughts, arranging and rearranging the future as if you could make it stand firm. But worldly wisdom, however clever it seems, is foolishness and cannot profit its possessor beyond this life. The wisdom you need is not that frantic reasoning that churns in the night, but the hidden wisdom of God, given to those who cast themselves utterly upon Him. When Peter relied on himself, he sank; but the Master, even in chains, turned and looked upon him, and that glance broke his heart and restored him. So too, Christ fixes His gaze upon you, not to accuse, but to raise you up through a flood of trustful tears.
Therefore, do not merely pray for the anxiety to vanish while still clinging to the helm yourself. Groan from the depths, and as you groan, look to heaven, and His own Word, bringing compunction, will lead you out of this bitter slavery. The tranquility you seek is not the absence of trouble, but the peace that Christ left as His own gift, a peace that can reign in the heart even when the home is shaken. This is the mother of all good things, the foundation of joy.
But take care: peace is not a matter of the lips alone. When we say to one another, “Peace be with you,” and in church we hear “Peace be unto all,” we must receive it with our whole mind and will, not merely with a spoken response. If outwardly you utter calming words to your soul, yet inwardly you remain at war, spitting at God’s providence with secret complaints and reproaches, what peace is that? True love and peace are woven together with faith. Without faith, the cheerful confidence that He orders all things well, love grows cold and peace shatters into fragments.
So lay down the clay of your own anxious schemes. The evil one knows your greed for knowledge of the future and would have you wear yourself out trying to peer around every corner. But Christ has promised to show you what is needful and to walk with you through every difficulty, so that nothing shall overtake you without warning or without His presence. Your home is guarded not by the clenching of your fists, but by the angel of peace that attends each believer who walks in humility. Let there be an end to this inner war, this turbulence of passions, so that you may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. Then, whether the world is calm or convulsed, nothing from without can truly harm you. May that peace, which surpasses all understanding, stand sentinel over your heart and your household.
