World Religions: Atheism

I know a lot of people will disagree, but atheism is, in many ways, like a religion. In any case it is an unChristian worldview which is worth discussing in this series.

History
There have probably always been people who doubt God's existence, but it began becoming popular during the Renaissance with the rise of humanism. This philosophy focused on humans, rather than God, which was radically different from the medieval times, which is sometimes called the Age of Faith. Another major event that led to the degradation of God so prevelent in America today was the theory of evolution. For information on what the theory is and its problems, try http://www.answersingenesis.org/get-answers#/topic/evolution Over the years, since many scientists believe in evolution and interpret evidence through that worldview, a lot of people do not seem to give much thought to God and operate under the assumption that there is no God at all. (Please do not be mistaken. There were many amazing accomplishments from the Renaissance, and I am not anti-science. The point is that God should be the top priority and that when people began to lose their focus on God, they began to lose their faith as well.)

Beliefs
The beliefs of atheists may vary greatly, but they all believe that God does not exist. Most atheists will believe in at least one of the following:
  • Evolution
  • The world has existed for millions of years
  • There is no morally right and wrong. Theoretically, this would mean that there is no moral difference between killing your mother and giving your mother a hug.
  • All religions teach basically the same thing.
  • Christians are anti-science. (There is scientific evidence for the existence of God. I recommend www.answersingenesis.org and www.godandscience.org)
  • Life has no purpose. They think that since God doesn't exist, then life is just an accident and there is no reason to do good things, bad things, or really anything at all.

What do they believe about Jesus?
Atheists don't really believe anything about Jesus. They believe He was an ordinary man like you and me.

Atheists vs. Agnostics
An atheist believes God doesn't exist, while agnostics are more neutral. They are a little more open to the possibility of God, but they also believe that God doesn't really care about humans, that He is a distant being not involved in their affairs. Agnostics may also think that no one can really know if there is a God and who He is.

Please Pray
  • That atheists would see the problems with the evolution theory.
  • That atheists would come to Christ.
  • That they would be convicted of their sin and that there is a natural, moral, right and wrong.
  • That more Christians would reach out to their atheist friends and family members.
  • For my two older brothers, both of whom are atheists.
  • For any prayer requests in the comments section.

Hi there,

This is my prayer for your two brothers.

Dear God,

I thank You for such a mighty young witness such as this sister in Christ. Her love and passion for You makes me pale in comparison when compared to my age! Lord, I pray that You lift the veil off the eyes of two her brothers, and bind the strongholds that Satan has over them, that they may see the truth. That the philosophy of atheism is steeped in irreconciliable difficulties to actually live out. Lord, I ask that the Holy Spirit continues to stir their hearts and soften their wills, that they will be curious about spiritual things and seek You. I pray You surround them with true Christians, whose light shine forth and Your love through them will be so evident, that her brothers will want what Christians have. That their lives pale in comparison to true Christians. Let the Holy Spirit surround them such that they have no choice but to confront the realities of Christ that they will give their lives to You. I also pray for this sister, that her heart and mind will continue to grow for You, and she will continue to develop fruits of the Spirit, so that her brothers will experience the type of love You give. Keep her strong and patient. In Jesus' name Amen!

Hey would you also mind keeping me in prayer please? Im going through a tricky financial situation now and have been particularly witnessing to two people. One is an outright atheist who thinks Im illogical and the other is agnostic but a bit more open. Pleaes pray God will allow me to walk through unscathed in the financial situation and not be persecuted. And that the two I'm praying for will open up and seek God. That I will also be well equipped to continue witnessing and living a life pleasing to Him.

Thank you so much sister! :)

Dear Jesus,

I pray for fairydust's witnesses. Open their hearts to you. Reveal to them your power and love. Work a miracle and show them that they need you, that you want to be there for them. Show them what Christianity really is, that it is not illogical. Please also work in fairydust and show him/her what to say. Thank you. I love you!

Dear Jesus,

Please also give fairydust financial stability. Teach him/her to rely on you and trust you even when things are hard. Thank you, Master!

I hate it when atheists think Christians are illogical. Here are some good apologetics links I like:

Also, if you have any questions you can't answer, send me a message and I will try to help. Above all, listen to the Holy Spirit. When John and Peter were preaching in the book of Acts, and the priests and elders heard them, they were amazed to see that they were "normal, uneducated" men.

Have a great day!
