The thunder is His voice, and the lightning is His servant. You do well to pray, for neither the storm nor the steady labor of your hands is outside His dominion. Yet consider this: the work of Christ in us does not exempt us from work, nor does the Holy Spirit's work supersede human effort, but rather excites it. You are diligent in your calling, and that is right. But let not the anxiety of the storm distract you from the deeper truth that all your work, whether in calm or tempest, must be committed into His hands. It is to God's work, not our own, that we have to look.
Your safety, too, lies not in the passing of the clouds but in the keeping power of the only wise God our Savior. You need an infinite Friend to keep you in safety against all the machinations of your adversaries, whether they be foul weather or spiritual foes. He is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Let this truth steady your heart while the rain beats against the window. The Lord hath set His face against all confidences other than a holy reliance on the finished work and righteousness of Jesus Christ.
While you work from home, remember the Model Home Mission of our Master. It was always the Lord's intention that the Gospel should begin at home, and from that sacred domestic sphere the blessing spread abroad. Your present labor, offered up in faith, becomes Sabbath-work, service by which God is honored among men. But never let the earthly task eclipse the heavenly one. The night comes when no man can work; therefore, work the works of Him that sent you while it is day. Abundant Christian work and hard Christian work must have combined with it inward soul conflict. If your soul never breaks for another, you will not be the means of breaking that other's heart.
Pray then, not merely that the thunder may be silenced, but that in the hush which follows you may hear the still small voice bidding you rest utterly upon Christ. Where you have to do with the work of procuring your own peace, it will be marred and spoiled and will end in confusion. Salvation is of the Lord. Cast yourself upon Him for time and for eternity. May the Lord establish the work of your hands, yes, establish it, yet more importantly, establish you in the faith once delivered to the saints. He could have done the work without us if He had pleased, and He can carry on the work without us when He takes us Home. Let the thunder roll, if it must; your life is hid with Christ in God.
