Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for me. I have a co-worker with PTSD who is very controlling and manipulative. I need to talk with my supervisor about him. Please pray for me. I have a co-worker with PTSD who is very controlling and manipulative. I need to talk with my supervisor about him.

We have heard your request and we join together with you in seeking God's will for this difficult workplace situation. We understand how heavy it is to work alongside someone who is controlling and manipulative, and how much wisdom and courage it takes to approach a supervisor about it. We want to lift both you and your co-worker before the Lord.

We recognize that your co-worker carries the burden of PTSD, and we are called to bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ, Galatians 6:2, and to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave us, Ephesians 4:32. That suffering deserves compassion and prayer for healing, yet compassion does not mean that controlling or manipulative behavior should be excused or enabled. Such behavior does not reflect the love that is patient and kind and does not seek its own way, and we gently rebuke any spirit of control and manipulation, for it harms fellowship and peace in the workplace.

For your conversation with your supervisor, we pray that you will be given wisdom and grace. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him, James 1:5. We encourage you to speak the truth in love, Ephesians 4:15, letting your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, Colossians 4:6, and remembering that a gentle answer turns away wrath, Proverbs 15:1. Go in a spirit of respect for authority, with facts rather than accusations, seeking peace and clarity rather than gossip or complaining. It is wise to document what has happened, to pray beforehand, to choose a calm time, and to express your desire for a healthy work environment for everyone, including your co-worker. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men, Romans 12:18. We also encourage you to set clear, respectful boundaries going forward, entrusting your work to the Lord, for whatever you do, work heartily as for the Lord, Colossians 3:23.

We also noticed that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We gently remind you that it is only by His name that we have access to the Father, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already done so, we encourage you to put your trust in Jesus, confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation, Romans 10:9. It is through Jesus that our prayers are heard.

We pray together for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and lift up our brother or sister in this workplace trial. Grant wisdom, clarity, and courage for the conversation with the supervisor, let words be gracious and truthful and let the supervisor receive them with understanding and fairness. Guard our dear one from anxiety and give peace that surpasses understanding, Philippians 4:6-7, and help to establish healthy boundaries while showing Christlike love. We also lift up the co-worker who is struggling with PTSD, asking for Your healing, comfort, and deliverance from patterns of control and manipulation, and that he may know Your mercy and restoration. Let Your will be done in this workplace, let peace and respect be restored, and let all involved be drawn closer to You. We entrust this situation into Your hands and ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

We hear how heavy this has felt, trying to work alongside someone whose behavior feels controlling while also wanting to be compassionate about what he is carrying. Wanting to handle this wisely and to talk with your supervisor well is a good and responsible desire, and we are praying with you for clarity and steadiness as you do.

It can help to think in terms of boundaries as property lines. They simply clarify what is yours to carry and what is not, so you can stay connected to others without losing freedom to say yes or no as you need to. That is not unkind, it protects both dignity and working relationships.

As you prepare to speak with your supervisor, one practical step that often helps is to jot down a few brief, factual examples beforehand. Note what happened, when, and how it affected your work, rather than trying to explain motives or diagnosis. That keeps the conversation calm, clear, and focused on finding a workable path forward. Choosing a quiet, private time and perhaps bringing one possible solution you would welcome can also make it easier for your supervisor to help.

Father, we lift this workplace situation to You in Jesus' name. Grant wisdom for words that are truthful and gracious, protection and peace for everyone involved, and guidance for the supervisor to respond with fairness. Give our friend courage and calm as he steps into this conversation, and lead him day by day. Amen.

We have lifted your request to the Lord and we join you in seeking His grace for this difficult situation in your workplace. It is a heavy burden to labor alongside one who is controlling and manipulative, and to carry concern for his suffering from trauma while also needing to guard your own integrity and peace in your duties.

Wisdom is the compass by which a man must steer across the trackless waste of life, and without it we run to and fro wasting strength. The price of true wisdom is above rubies and it is not found in our own judgment, for there is not much more wisdom in man's judgment of such matters than is commonly supposed. Christ Himself is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and He planned the way of salvation and by His skill the very pillars of the heavens are balanced. From Him alone comes wisdom that is pure and practical for daily duty. Therefore we pray as the word exhorts, that the Lord would give you wisdom and understanding that you may keep His law and walk uprightly in all things, trusting in God which is true wisdom.

When you speak with your supervisor, seek to do so with truth seasoned with grace, not in a spirit of accusation but in a spirit of honesty and love. Speak of what you have observed and experienced, without exaggeration, and with a desire for what is right for all, including your coworker. Pray that the Lord would give you words that are clear and calm, that you may not be overcome by conflict within or without, but may stand in the strength which Christ supplies to those who come to God by Him. Remember also to show compassion toward your coworker in his affliction, while not excusing what is controlling or manipulative, and to commit his healing and restoration to the great Wonder Worker who abounds in wisdom and longsuffering and patience.

Let us pray. O Lord our God, there is none like You for goodness and love and wisdom, and what You do is always best. Grant to this Your servant a double portion of wisdom and understanding for this conversation, that it may be conducted with integrity and kindness. Guard the heart from bitterness and the tongue from hasty words. Give favor with the supervisor and let truth be spoken in love. Have mercy upon the coworker who suffers, bring healing where there is trauma, and bring conviction and change where there is sin. Let Your will be done in this workplace as it is in heaven, and make Your servant to be a fit companion for holy duty, walking in the way of wisdom which You have revealed in Christ. For His sake we ask it. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
