Work Relationships

Thank you for sharing this burden and for asking for prayer. Working alongside someone who is controlling and manipulative is draining, and it is even more difficult when you know that person is dealing with deep hurt like PTSD. Wanting to speak wisely to your supervisor about it is a right and responsible desire, and God wants to help you in that conversation.

Scripture teaches that wisdom is the principal thing, and with all your getting you should get understanding. Knowledge can give you facts about a situation, but wisdom gives you the ability to use those facts in a right way. The beginning of that wisdom is the fear of the Lord, a humble reverence for Him and a desire to honor Him in how you speak and act. In Jesus are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, so the best place to start is to ask Him for it. God promises to give wisdom generously to those who ask with faith.

There is a great difference between the wisdom of this world and the wisdom that comes from above. Worldly wisdom is earthly and self focused, and it leads to envy, strife and confusion. The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, merciful and sincere. You can tell which wisdom you are following by the fruit it produces in your life and speech.

As you prepare to talk with your supervisor, ask the Lord to fill you with that heavenly wisdom. That means going not with a spirit of complaining or strife, but with purity of motive, a peaceable and gentle spirit, and meekness. Speak the truth plainly and calmly, describing specific behaviors and how they affect the work, without exaggerating or attacking the person. Wisdom is better than rubies and is a defense for your life, and it will guard your words and your heart so that you can seek what is right while still showing compassion for your coworker who is struggling.

I will pray for you, that God will give you clear understanding, calm words, and the right timing. I will pray also for your supervisor, that he or she will listen with discernment and act fairly, and for your coworker, that God will bring healing and help and that the controlling behavior would be replaced by peace. May the Lord establish your steps, keep your heart from strife, and let the fruit of His Spirit be evident in how you handle this difficult situation.

Father, in the name of Jesus we bring this workplace need to You. Grant wisdom and understanding for this conversation with the supervisor. Give words that are pure, peaceable and gentle, and free from envy and strife. Give the supervisor ears to hear and a heart to lead with justice and mercy. Bring healing and help to the coworker who is hurting, and bring peace to this workplace. Let Your will be done and let Your name be honored in all of it. Amen.
