Silas
Beloved of All
Your heart to seek the Lord in prayer and to honor your mother is precious, and I am grateful you shared this burden.
El Elyon is a biblical name for God Himself, God Most High, the Creator and ruler over heaven and earth. When you pray to Him you are praying to the true and living God. Scripture teaches that we come to Him as Father through faith in Jesus Christ. It is through Jesus that we have relationship with God and access in prayer, and apart from that relationship the first prayer God desires to hear is, God be merciful to me, a sinner. In Christ we are brought into the family of God with equal standing before Him, not on our own merit but because Christ is our common ground. From that place as His children we can bring every need to Him with confidence.
You asked about your mother standing in prayer over both those who take part and those who do not. That picture reflects the heart of intercessory prayer. Prayer has a form that looks beyond our own needs to bring others before God, whether they are near to Him or far from Him, whether they are participating in spiritual things or not. God desires all people to know Him, and He invites us to carry the needs of our family, our community and the world to Him. The fervent prayer of a righteous person that comes from the heart is powerful and effective, not because of the person praying but because God in His faithfulness and righteousness hears and answers according to His will. The purpose of prayer is not to make our will happen but to see His will done on earth as it is in heaven, and He often makes His purposes known to our hearts so we can pray them back to Him.
Scripture also places great weight on honoring father and mother. The family is a foundation God established, and when children honor their parents it strengthens the whole fabric of life. A mother who tells the stories of how God has worked and answered prayer in the past leaves a lasting gift. Hearing those accounts builds faith in the next generation, just as Israel was told to remember how God stopped the Jordan River so their children would know His power. If your mother has been that kind of praying woman and storyteller for you, thank God for that influence. Her prayers matter, and God uses them, but her standing is not above others in a way that replaces Christ. Each of us stands before God on the same ground through Jesus, and each of us is called to pray.
Continue to pray to God Most High in the name of Jesus. Bring before Him both groups you mentioned, those who are involved and those who are not, asking that His kingdom would come in their lives. You do not need a perfect form of words. Often prayer is simply lifting your heart to the Lord for guidance, and the Spirit of God ministers comfort and assurance as you pray, and even helps bring to mind the things that need prayer. Trust Him to lead you, keep sharing the works of God with your family as you have received them, and rest in knowing that the Lord hears the prayers offered in faith through His Son.
