Why evildoers always get away and prosper with their ill-gotten gains

Good and Faithful Servant
Why evildoers always get away and prosper with their ill-gotten gains with lots of politics but the righteous have to suffer for God's kingdom.

We hear the deep frustration and pain in your question, and we understand the struggle of watching those who reject God’s ways seem to thrive while the faithful endure hardship. This is a question that has weighed on the hearts of believers since ancient times, and Scripture does not shy away from addressing it. The psalmist Asaph wrestled with this very thing in Psalm 73, where he confessed, *"For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills"* (Psalm 73:3-5 WEB). Like you, he saw the apparent ease of the wicked and felt the sting of injustice.

But Asaph’s perspective shifted when he entered the sanctuary of God. There, he saw the end of the wicked: *"Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. How they are destroyed in a moment! They are utterly swept away by terrors!"* (Psalm 73:18-19 WEB). The prosperity of the wicked is temporary, like grass that withers in the heat of the sun (Psalm 37:2). Their wealth, power, and influence are fleeting, for they have built their lives on a foundation of sand. In contrast, the righteous may suffer now, but their reward is eternal. Jesus Himself promised, *"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven"* (Matthew 5:10 WEB). The suffering of the righteous is not in vain; it refines their faith like gold in the fire (1 Peter 1:7).

We must also remember that God’s justice is perfect, even when it is not immediate. The prophet Habakkuk cried out to God about the wickedness he saw, and God’s response was clear: *"The righteous will live by his faith"* (Habakkuk 2:4 WEB). God is not indifferent to evil. He sees every injustice, every act of corruption, and every ill-gotten gain. He will repay, for vengeance belongs to Him (Romans 12:19). The wicked may seem to prosper now, but their day of reckoning will come. As Proverbs 11:21 (WEB) declares, *"Though they join hand in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished; but the offspring of the righteous shall be delivered."*

We rebuke the lie that evil will ultimately triumph. The cross of Christ stands as the ultimate proof that God’s justice and mercy are real. Jesus, the sinless One, suffered unjustly at the hands of wicked men, yet through His death and resurrection, He conquered sin and death forever. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in the lives of believers, sustaining them through trials and guaranteeing their eternal victory. The apostle Paul reminds us, *"I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us"* (Romans 8:18 WEB).

We also caution against the temptation to envy the wicked or to grow bitter in the face of injustice. Envy only poisons the soul and distracts us from God’s purposes. Instead, we are called to trust in the Lord and do good (Psalm 37:3). Our focus must remain on God’s kingdom, not on the temporary successes of those who oppose Him. Jesus taught us to pray, *"Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"* (Matthew 6:10 WEB). This is our hope—that God’s kingdom will ultimately prevail, and every knee will bow before Him (Philippians 2:10).

Let us pray together for you and for all who struggle with this question. Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, wrestling with the apparent prosperity of the wicked and the suffering of the righteous. Lord, we confess our frustration and our weariness, but we choose to trust in You. Remind us, Father, that Your justice is sure, even when it is delayed. Help us to fix our eyes on You and not on the temporary successes of those who reject Your ways. Strengthen our faith, Lord, and fill us with Your peace as we wait for Your kingdom to come in fullness.

Father, we ask that You would expose the deeds of darkness and bring the wicked to repentance or to justice. Let Your light shine into the places of corruption and politics where evil seems to thrive. We pray for the righteous who are suffering for Your name, that You would sustain them, comfort them, and remind them of the eternal reward that awaits them. Help them to stand firm in their faith, knowing that their labor in You is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

Lord, we also pray for those who are caught in the snare of sin, whether through greed, power, or deceit. Soften their hearts, Father, and draw them to repentance. Let them see the emptiness of their ways and turn to You, the only source of true life. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who conquered sin and death and who will one day return to judge the living and the dead. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on Psalm 37, which speaks directly to this struggle. It begins with these words: *"Don’t fret because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither like the green herb"* (Psalm 37:1-2 WEB). The psalm goes on to remind us to trust in the Lord, delight in Him, commit our ways to Him, and wait patiently for Him. God’s timing is perfect, and His justice is certain.

We also urge you to guard your heart against bitterness. Bitterness is a poison that only harms the one who harbors it. Instead, choose to forgive, even as Christ has forgiven you (Colossians 3:13). Forgiveness does not mean excusing evil; it means releasing the burden of anger and trusting God to handle justice. As you do this, you will find freedom and peace.

Finally, remember that your suffering for righteousness’ sake is a testimony to the world. When others see your faith in the midst of trials, it points them to Christ. Jesus said, *"Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven"* (Matthew 5:16 WEB). Your endurance in faith is a powerful witness, and God will use it for His glory. Keep your eyes on Him, and He will lead you through every trial.

We're right there with you, feeling the sting of injustice. It's tough to see wrongdoers prosper while the righteous seem to struggle. But remember, God sees all. He's not surprised by the corruption or the temporary success of the wicked. He's watching, and He's working. Let's keep our eyes on Him, trusting in His perfect timing and justice. Let's pray.

Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
