Why evil men get away with things

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, seeking understanding and wisdom as we grapple with the age-old question of why evil seems to prosper and why those who commit grievous wrongs sometimes appear to escape justice in this life. Your concern is one that echoes through the pages of Scripture, and we find comfort in knowing that God’s Word addresses this very issue.

The psalmist Asaph wrestled with this same question in Psalm 73, where he confessed his struggle when he saw the prosperity of the wicked. He wrote, *"For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For they have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills"* (Psalm 73:3-5 WEB). Asaph’s heart was troubled until he entered the sanctuary of God and gained an eternal perspective. He realized that the wicked stand on slippery ground, and their apparent prosperity is temporary. God will bring them to ruin in His perfect timing.

We must remember that God’s justice is not always immediate, but it is certain. Proverbs 16:4 tells us, *"Yahweh has made everything for its own end—yes, even the wicked for the day of evil."* The Lord sees all things, and He will judge every deed in His righteousness. The release of someone from prison does not mean they have escaped God’s justice. It may simply mean that their earthly consequences are not the full measure of God’s judgment. Romans 12:19 reminds us, *"Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, ‘Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.’"*

We also must guard our hearts against bitterness or envy when we see injustice. Asaph nearly stumbled in his faith because he focused on the temporary prosperity of the wicked rather than the eternal promises of God. We are called to trust in the Lord’s sovereignty, even when we do not understand His ways. Proverbs 3:5-6 exhorts us, *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths."*

Let us also consider the power of prayer for those who have committed evil. While we may not understand why some are released from prison, we can pray for their repentance and transformation. Ezekiel 33:11 declares, *"As I live,’ says the Lord Yahweh, ‘I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why will you die, house of Israel?’"* God desires that all would come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), and our prayers can be part of His work in their lives.

Now, let us come before the Lord in prayer:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that long for justice and righteousness. We confess that it is difficult for us to understand why evil seems to go unpunished at times, and why those who have caused harm are sometimes released from earthly consequences. Lord, we ask for Your wisdom and perspective, for our understanding is limited, but Yours is infinite. Help us to trust in Your sovereignty and to rest in the knowledge that You see all things and will judge every deed in Your perfect timing.

Father, we pray for those who have committed wrongs and have been released from prison. We ask that You would work in their hearts, drawing them to repentance and transformation. Let them see the error of their ways and turn to You for forgiveness and new life. If they have not yet placed their faith in Jesus Christ, we pray that they would come to know Him as their Lord and Savior, for there is no other name by which they can be saved (Acts 4:12). May they experience the power of Your grace and walk in the newness of life that You offer.

Lord, we also pray for those who have been hurt by the actions of others. Comfort them with Your presence and heal their wounds. Help them to release any bitterness or desire for revenge, trusting in Your promise that vengeance belongs to You. Fill them with Your peace and remind them of Your unfailing love.

Father, we ask that You would strengthen our faith when we struggle to understand Your ways. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on You and the eternal promises of Your Word. May we be a people who trust in You completely, even when life does not make sense. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

In times like these, it is crucial to remember that our hope is not in the justice of this world but in the righteousness of God. While we may not see immediate consequences for evil, we can trust that God’s justice will prevail. Let us continue to pray for those who have done wrong, that they would turn to Christ and be transformed. And let us also pray for ourselves, that we would not grow weary or lose heart but remain steadfast in our faith, knowing that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).

We've been reflecting on your words and we feel your struggle. It's tough, isn't it? Seeing evil seemingly get away with things, or even being released from prison. It's easy to question, to wonder why. But remember, God sees all. He's not surprised, He's not caught off guard. His ways are higher than ours, His thoughts not ours to understand fully.

We've been reminded of Job, who lost everything and yet declared, "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; may the name of the Lord be praised" (Job 1:21). Job didn't understand why, but he trusted God. That's our challenge, isn't it? To trust when we don't understand.

Let's pray together, shall we?

Lord, we come to You with heavy hearts. We confess our struggle to understand why evil sometimes seems to prosper. Help us, Lord. Help us to trust in Your goodness, even when we don't understand Your ways. Give us wisdom, give us faith. Help us to see things from Your perspective.

We lift up those who have committed wrongs and have been released. Lord, we ask that You would work in their hearts. Draw them to repentance, to transformation. Help them to see the error of their ways and turn to You for forgiveness and new life.

And Lord, we pray for those who have been hurt. Comfort them, heal their wounds. Help them to release any bitterness, any desire for revenge. Fill them with Your peace, remind them of Your unfailing love.

Strengthen our faith, Lord. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on You, even when life doesn't make sense. Help us to trust in You completely.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
