What is my purpose

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I dropped out of my studies due to mental health issues. I’m ### yet very dependent on my parents financially and to do stuff (I can’t drive and do normal things almost). My mother doesn’t stop complaining about what a disappointment I turned out to be. I locked myself in the bathroom and cried after that. Jesus please reveal my calling. I wanted something grandiose before and now I just want something to make me more independent and functional on my own. It’s been years. Why is Jesus not granting me this one wish?

We hear the pain and heaviness in your heart and we have brought your request before the Lord together. To feel without purpose, to carry the weight of mental health struggles, to feel dependent when you long to be independent, and to hear words of disappointment from your own mother and then weep alone behind a locked door is a deep sorrow, and God sees it all.

We want to remind you first that your purpose is not found in a grandiose achievement or in what you can produce, but in who you are to God. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and He formed you with intent. Psalm 139:13-14 says you were knit together in your mother's womb, and Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. Your purpose at its core is to know God, to glorify Him, and to walk faithfully in the good works He has prepared for you. That calling is not measured by degrees or by how quickly you can drive or live on your own, but by faithfulness to Him where you are. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Even in this long season of waiting and struggle, He has not forgotten you.

We also hear how deeply your mother's words have wounded you. Scripture calls children to honor their father and mother as in Exodus 20:12, and we encourage you to continue to show honor even when it is painful, but Scripture also says fathers and mothers should not provoke their children to anger, so that they won't be discouraged as in Ephesians 6:4 and Colossians 3:21. Her constant complaining is not reflecting the grace and encouragement God calls parents to show. We encourage you, as you are able, to share honestly and calmly with her how her words affect you, and to seek a trusted pastor, counselor, or mature believer to help mediate that conversation if needed. And know that God collects your tears. Psalm 56:8 says He puts your tears into his bottle and records them in his book. When you cried alone in the bathroom, you were not unseen. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for you, and Matthew 11:28 says Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

You asked why Jesus has not granted this one wish for independence and functionality after years of praying. We gently correct the idea that Jesus withholds good from you out of neglect. His ways and thoughts are higher than ours as in Isaiah 55:8-9, and He does not answer as one who grants wishes, but as a loving Father who gives what is best in His perfect timing and for our ultimate good. Sometimes He says wait, sometimes He says I have something better, and sometimes He is doing a deeper work in us while we wait. 2 Corinthians 12:9 shows us that His grace is sufficient for us, for power is made perfect in weakness. Your mental health struggles do not disqualify you from His calling, they are part of the place where His strength can be displayed. James 1:2-4 teaches that the testing of our faith produces endurance, and Romans 8:28 promises that God works all things together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. He is not ignoring your prayer for independence. He hears you, and He wants you to seek first his Kingdom and his righteousness as in Matthew 6:33, trusting that He will add what you need as you walk faithfully step by step.

That desire you now have, not for grandiosity but simply to be more independent and functional, is a good and humble desire. God delights in faithfulness in small things. Luke 16:10 says he who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much. Your calling may be revealed not in one sudden grandiose moment, but in small daily steps of stewardship, service, and growth. Proverbs 3:5-6 calls us to trust in Yahweh with all our heart, and not lean on our own understanding, and to acknowledge him in all our ways so he will direct our paths. We encourage you to take practical steps alongside prayer, to seek help for your mental health through biblical counseling and, if needed, professional care, to talk with your pastor or a trusted mentor about your gifts and next steps, to ask God to show you one small area where you can grow in responsibility or serve others this week, and to remain in community rather than isolating when the pain is heavy.

We are praying for you now.

Father in heaven, we lift this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ, our only hope and our access to Your throne. Lord, You see the years of struggle, the studies that were laid down, the dependence that feels so heavy, and the wound of a mother's words. We ask You to reveal in a fresh way how loved and purposefully made this child of Yours is. Heal the hurt and bring comfort where there have been tears behind a closed door. We pray Isaiah 41:10 over this life, that You would strengthen and uphold with Your righteous right hand and cast out fear. Grant wisdom to navigate the relationship with parents, soften the mother's heart to speak with grace and encouragement, and give this dear one courage to honor You while also seeking healthy boundaries. Lord, reveal Your calling step by step, lead to the right supports for mental health, open doors for growth toward greater independence and functionality, and give daily strength for faithful small steps. Teach us all to trust Your timing and not grow weary, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard heart and mind as in Philippians 4:6-7. We ask that Your will be done and that this life would bring glory to You, in Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to keep seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word, to stay connected to a local church body where you can be known and supported, and to not define yourself by the word disappointment. You are not a disappointment to God. You are His beloved child, and He is still writing your story. Keep bringing this wish to Jesus, not as a demand, but as a humble request from a child to a Father who loves you, and trust that He will answer in the way that leads to lasting good and to His glory.

We hear how heavy this has been for you, and how long you have carried it. Dropping out, feeling dependent on your parents for so much, hearing your mother say you are a disappointment and then locking yourself in the bathroom to cry, that is a painful and lonely place to be. Wanting to be more independent and able to function on your own is a good and understandable desire, and it makes sense you are asking Jesus why it still feels out of reach after years of waiting.

We want you to know that your worth is not measured by how quickly you become independent or by whether your calling feels grandiose. You were made for relationship with God and with others, and purpose often grows quietly through small, faithful steps rather than one dramatic moment. The shift you described, from wanting something big to simply wanting to be able to live more steadily on your own, is actually a mature and honest prayer.

It can help to not carry this alone. Would you consider sharing openly with one safe person, a pastor, a trusted mentor, or a counselor, about how stuck you feel and what one small next step toward independence might look like for you? Since you mentioned mental health challenges affecting your studies and daily life, we also encourage you to reach out to a counselor or medical professional for support alongside prayer.

Jesus, we bring our friend to You. You see the tears, the years of waiting, and the longing to be more whole and independent. Give comfort in the hurt from family words, wisdom for next steps, and caring people to walk alongside. Show Your presence and leading day by day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your tears behind a locked door have not been shed unseen, and your question about purpose has not gone unheard before the Lord. To feel dependent when you long to be independent, to hear words of disappointment from the very lips that should speak love, and to cry out for Jesus to reveal a calling and to feel that heaven is silent, this is a heavy laden state indeed. Hear then what the Lord would say to such a burdened soul.

In every event of Providence God has a purpose. He is in one mind, and who can turn Him. What His soul desireth, that He doeth. This is not a cold doctrine but a warm comfort. None of these things cometh by chance, none happeneth out of order, but everything cometh according to the purpose of His own will. Your dropping out of studies, your struggle with mental health, your dependence upon your parents, your inability to do what others seem to do with ease, even the bitter words that wounded you and drove you to weep alone, all are known to Him who is carrying out still His one great purpose. That purpose is not changed, and it is sure to be effected, yet it is a wonderful thing how God effects His purpose while still the creature is free. We have to labor too. He does not call you to sit idle while you wait for a voice from heaven, but to walk with Him step by step as His pupil.

You ask for your calling, and you once wanted something grandiose, and now you would be content with something to make you more independent and functional. Let me turn your eyes from a grand career to a grand Christ. The first and highest calling is not to a task but to a Person. It is an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. It is a high calling and a heavenly calling, a call from heaven and a call to heaven, a call that lifts the heart to holiness and to eternity. Effectual calling is a very gracious truth. Zaccheus was the last man we should have supposed to be saved, yet Jesus looked up and called him by name, and said, Make haste and come down. So He knows your name. He calls His own sheep by name and they know His voice. If you have a desire to come, if you are forcing your way through the ashes to get to Christ, then it is because Christ is calling you. Your calling is first to come unto Him.

And to you who labor and are heavy laden, Jesus Himself gives the invitation, Come unto Me, and I will give you rest. There is nothing written in God's blessed Book that can render it unlawful for you to come to Him, for He who knows the Father's eternal purpose still bids you come. Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your heart. Now is the accepted time. Come just as you are, with your weakness, your dependence, your tears, and find in Him both pardon and healing, for healing and forgiveness are placed in happy conjunction. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. The torn leaves of that sacred volume have brought healing to many souls, for they led them to repose on the mercy of God which is sufficient for the chief of sinners. The very leaves are healing, and they change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. When the Lord comes and dwells with His people, the Sun of Righteousness rises with healing in His wings.

Do not think that because your mother calls you a disappointment, you are so before God. We were all once not God's people, contrary to Him in thought and way, yet the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin, and God has justified His own. Your worth is not measured by your mother's complaints, nor by your ability to drive or to live alone, but by the price paid for you at Calvary. Honor your parents as the Lord commands, but seek your approval first from Him who will never cast out His pupil. David could say, O God, Thou hast taught me from my youth, and hitherto have I declared Thy wondrous works. He was chastened, but he was never cast out, he still continued as God's pupil. God has been teaching you, even in these years that feel wasted. He puts object lessons before His scholars, and you have been learning your own weakness that you may learn His strength.

Why has Jesus not granted this one wish as you desired and when you desired. God's promise may tarry, but it never fails. Has God forgotten to be gracious. No. His purpose is unchanged, but His time is not our time. He desires your holiness and your wholeness more than your immediate independence, and He will do what His soul desireth in the way that most displays His wisdom and love. This waiting is not rejection. It is schooling. And while you wait, you are to labor too, in the strength He supplies. The desire to be more independent and functional is a good and sober desire, and God honors faithful labor in little things. Press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Be faithful in the small duties of today, in seeking help for your health, in speaking honestly with godly counsel and with your parents where possible, in prayer, in the Word, in simple tasks set before you. God often builds independence not in one grandiose leap but in quiet, daily steps taken with Him.

May the Lord lift up your heart by His heavenly calling, set you upon heavenly things, and give you rest even as you wait for clearer guidance. May He heal you, forgive you, and teach you, and make you to declare His wondrous works in due season.

I pray for you now, that the Lord Jesus would draw near to you in that bathroom where you wept, and in the home where you feel dependent, that He would speak plainly to your heart as one who calls His sheep by name, that He would give you rest for your soul, healing for your mind, and grace to take the next faithful step. May He show you that your chief purpose is to know Him and be known by Him, and from that holy calling may all other duties find their proper place, according to His unchanging and infallible purpose. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honesty in sharing this pain is heard, and the tears you shed alone in that bathroom are not hidden from God. To feel dependent on your parents, unable to do what seems normal for others, and to hear from your own mother that you are a disappointment, is a heavy burden to carry. It is understandable that you feel weary after years of this and that you are asking where your purpose is.

Purpose in the Christian life is not always found in something grandiose. Scripture speaks of being counted worthy of our calling and of fulfilling every desire for goodness and every work of faith with power. That calling is often lived out not in great public success but in quiet faithfulness, in patient endurance, in learning to do the next good thing before you with the strength God gives. The woman Lydia in Acts was not a person of high status, she sold purple cloth, yet God opened her heart and she immediately bore fruit in hospitality and faithfulness. God often works through ordinary, small steps rather than sudden grand revelations.

You asked why Jesus has not granted your wish for independence and to be more functional on your own. This desire itself is good, and God is not deaf to it. When Jesus prayed at the tomb of Lazarus He said, Father I thank you that you have heard me, and I knew that you hear me always. He did not pray because He lacked power, but to show that His will and the Father's will are one, and to strengthen the faith of those listening. In the same way, God hears you always, but His answer is not always immediate and not always in the form we expect. Prayer is not a way to compel God to do what we want when we want it. We are warned not to use vain repetition or to ask for things that do not concern our true good. Prayer is a great weapon for the daily battle. Life each day is like a storm with many rocks, and we need to make God favorable to us by prayer early in the morning and at night, so that we can go through the day without shipwreck. That kind of prayer does not just ask for a result, it aligns our hearts with God's will and gives us protection and steadiness while we wait.

Your wish to be more independent and functional is a right and healthy desire to bring to God, but God may be answering it slowly, by forming character and endurance in you rather than by an instant change. Years of waiting feel long, yet God often does His work in hidden ways for a great purpose, even when we cannot see it at the time. Your time of dependence is not a sign that you have no value or that you are forgotten. Your worth is not measured by whether you can drive or by academic success, but by being made in God's image and being loved by Christ who died for you.

For the days ahead, consider a few steady practices. Keep a simple pattern of prayer in the morning and evening, not long or elaborate, but honest, thanking God that He hears you and asking for help to do His will that day. Bring your mother and your hurt to God as well, and when possible seek a calm conversation with your parents or a trusted pastor or counselor about how their words affect you. For independence, do not try to change everything at once. Choose one small, functional step and ask for help to be faithful in it, whether that is a daily routine, a small job or volunteer task, a class, or learning one skill toward driving. If mental health struggles continue, please seek support from a pastor and a qualified counselor or medical professional, you do not have to carry this alone, and the church is meant to be a place where you are supported.

I pray for you now that God who sees you in secret will give you comfort, that He will open your heart as He opened Lydia's to hear His voice, that He will give you strength to endure and to do every good work with His power, that He will heal what is wounded by harsh words, and that He will guide you step by step into greater steadiness and independence according to His wise timing. May you know that you are heard, that you are not a disappointment to your Father in heaven, and that He will fulfill His good purpose in you as you continue to seek Him.
