Confession of Sin — a Sermon with Seven Texts
We hear your humble and honest confession and we join with you before the throne of grace with thanksgiving that you have turned to the Lord Jesus and the Father in repentance. There is great hope and mercy in this moment, for godly sorrow produces repentance to salvation, which brings no regret. But the sorrow of the world produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:10

We rejoice that you have not hidden what happened but have brought it into the light. He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. Proverbs 28:13 That is the heart of true repentance, not just feeling badly about handling something terribly, but turning away from it and turning again toward the Lord.

Scripture gives us such assurance when we come in this way. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 We cling to that promise with you. Because of the blood of Jesus shed on the cross, forgiveness is complete and cleansing is real. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12 Though your sins are as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Isaiah 1:18

We also want to encourage you not to remain under condemnation after you have confessed. The enemy would have you live in shame, but the Lord calls you to walk in freedom. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1 True repentance bears fruit, so we encourage you to ask the Lord to show you what handling it well would look like next time, to make restitution where it is needed and possible, and to walk in the new way He shows you. Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19

We pray together for you now.

Father God, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, and we thank You for this dear one who has humbled themselves before You. We thank You that You are merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness. Lord, we ask that You forgive what was handled terribly, that You blot out this sin by the blood of Jesus, and cleanse this heart from all unrighteousness. Grant times of refreshing from Your presence. Give wisdom for what is ahead, strength to walk in obedience, and peace that passes understanding. Help this one to fully receive Your forgiveness and to walk forward not in shame but in the joy of one who has been restored. Teach and guide in the way to go, and guard the heart from returning to what grieves You. We trust Your faithful and righteous character to keep this one in Your grace. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

We are grateful you brought this honestly before the Lord. Saying "I didn't handle it well, forgive me" takes humility, and we hear the sincerity in your repentance.

One thing that helps many after a moment like this is recognizing that turning back to God is a clear decision, even when feelings take longer to catch up. You can mean your repentance completely and still feel the weight of regret for a while. That lingering ache doesn't mean you haven't been heard. It often just means your heart is still processing what happened, and God is patient as you walk forward with Him.

If it would help, consider taking one concrete step this week. Find a trusted pastor or mature believer you respect and share briefly what happened and that you have repented and want to handle things differently next time. Speaking it out loud with one person can bring clarity, accountability and peace, and help you discern if there is any practical step to make things right where you can.

We are praying for you.

Father, thank You for hearing this honest confession. We ask You to assure this child of Your mercy in Jesus, to lift shame and give a clear mind and strength for the next steps. Lead them in Your will and help them walk closely with You in the days ahead. In Jesus' name, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayer is a precious one in the sight of God, for it carries within it that which He will not despise, a broken and a contrite heart. You say, forgive me Lord Jesus and Father God, I repent, and in that short confession you have come by the only right way to obtain mercy.

Do not think that repentance is a thing to be gotten through once at the beginning of the spiritual life and then done with. Repentance lives as long as faith lives. Sweet sister repentance is charming company for the whole of our pilgrimage, and she will walk with us even to the gates of pearl. The fact that you see now that you handled what happened terribly is not a sign that you are cast away, but a sign that the Holy Spirit is still working in a renewed heart.

Take care to weigh your repentance before the Lord. A true repentance gives God glory. It says, Lord, I have no claim upon You, I have no rights but the right to be punished, yet have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness, according unto the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. It does not make excuses, it casts itself wholly upon sovereign mercy. It looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only.

And here is your comfort, there is forgiveness with Him that He may be feared. If the Lord should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand, but there is forgiveness. Not a partial forgiveness with buts and reservations as men forgive, but a divine forgiveness. I, even I, am He that blotteth out your transgressions for My own sake, and will not remember your sins. He does not forgive you for the sake of your repentance or your faith, precious as they are, but purely of His own dear love, because He delights in mercy, and for the sake of His Son who bore the punishment in your place.

He not only forgave you at the first when you believed, but He continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness in Christ is a continuous and eternal one. You need not fear that you have gone beyond His mercy. However you have sinned, however terribly you feel you have failed, there is forgiveness with God through Jesus Christ His Son. He can save you though your sins be as black as hell is black, and it is no true repentance to believe you are past His mercy. That would be a sin against His infinite mercy.

So come again with unfeigned repentance and trust His dear Son. Confess fully, make a clean breast before Him, and He will give you a clean breast by absolution. Let your repentance make its rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the love of Christ and His finished work. Pray that He will not only blot out the transgression but purge the soul from dead works and fill it with living works, that your repentance and faith may be inseparable, the one pulling down what is evil and the other building up Christ as sole Master of the heart.

We will pray for you that you may read the sweetness of pardon into the bitterness of sorrow for sin, and know the joy of sins forgiven and fellowship restored.
