To declare that there is no God like Jehovah is to affirm His utter solitude in glory, His peerless supremacy over all that is named in heaven or on earth. What a sweeping word from Solomon's lips! You may assemble a parliament of idols, but the Lord remains "God alone." Stand upon this truth and let your heart be greatly established. There is none like Him, no rival can approach His throne, no false god can perform His wonders, no scheme of man can replicate His faithfulness. This is the bedrock of our hope: the God of Israel, our God through Christ Jesus, stands without competitor and without equal.

But observe where Solomon's adoration leads him, not merely to praise an abstract majesty, but to rest upon the covenant of love. Here is the marrow of the text. The living God is not a distant sovereign who merely towers above creation; He binds Himself to His people with bonds of steadfast love. In His covenant there is no cold legal arrangement that depends upon our fragile merit. We hear that glorious word: He keeps His covenant with servants who continue wholeheartedly in His way. Yet let none imagine that this wholeheartedness originates in our own weak resolve. The covenant itself provides it! Turn to the promise given through Jeremiah: the Lord pledges to give His people one heart and one way, that they may fear Him forever. The wholehearted devotion which He seeks, He Himself bestows.

Our hope does not tremble upon an "if" of human performance. Under the covenant of works, we are already lost, for we have broken every command. But the covenant of grace, ah, here is a better covenant made with a better Mediator! It was made with Christ Jesus, the Second Adam, who stood as our surety. He fulfilled the broken law, He offered full satisfaction to provoked justice, and He placed the "if" of our redemption beyond all doubt. Now it is a covenant of "shalls" and "wills", Jehovah saying, "I will, and you shall." He will ever be mindful of it, for it bears the blood-seal of His own Son. Not one single promise shall fall to the ground.

What then does it mean to us that there is no God like this? It means that the faithfulness of God outruns the unbelief of His people. The idols of our feeling, the mud gods of our imagination, prove utterly worthless, they crumble almost as soon as they are formed. Yet the true God bears His children to hoary hairs and carries them even when they have no strength to walk. You may be groaning over a cold heart and a straying spirit, but the covenant remains inviolate. If you are in Christ, you are in that covenant, for He Himself is the whole of it. Having the blessing of everlasting life, you must be in the covenant that bestows it.

Look yonder, upon those three crosses set upon a hill. There is the public exhibition of a love that goes to the end. Christ loved His own which were in the world, and He loves them still, altogether irrespective of their worthiness. Their sinfulness cannot travel so far but His love will travel beyond it. If you have cast away your strength, it is faithfulness on His part that you should feel your weakness and return to Him. The mercy seat remains, for it is Christ Himself, our propitiation. Cast yourself wholly upon Him. He who takes Christ takes all, saving knowledge, a new heart, persevering grace, and the home prepared above. Cease the vain effort to patch up a righteousness of your own, and let this be the anthem of your soul: Among the gods there is none like You, O Lord; none can compare with Your covenant-keeping love.
