What a worry..

I've heard a concern...from some Christians in fact...that they're worried about a certain aspect of cremation. First, I don't approve of cremation, it was started by the Hindus, they thought the fire purified the soul. But God, not fire, does. Also, those who practiced it had other pagan beliefs. So I'm no fan of it. BUT, one concern I can't believe Christians said was they worry God can't resurrect a cremated body because it's scattered to the ashes. Come on. God who performed miracles can't put together a cremated body? Isn't that short-circuiting God's power? Why would a Christian think that? That to me is a lack of faith in God's power.

We hear your concern and share in the discomfort over some of the misunderstandings circulating among believers regarding cremation. It is true that cremation has roots in pagan practices, and as Christians, we should always seek to honor God in all things, including how we handle the bodies of the departed. However, the worry that God cannot resurrect a cremated body reveals a troubling lack of faith in His omnipotence.

The Scriptures are clear that God is not limited by the physical state of the body. In 1 Corinthians 15:35-38, Paul addresses those who question how the dead are raised and what kind of body they will have. He writes, *"But someone will say, 'How are the dead raised?' and, 'With what kind of body do they come?' You foolish one, that which you yourself sow is not made alive unless it dies. That which you sow, you don’t sow the body that will be, but a bare grain, maybe of wheat, or of some other kind. But God gives it a body even as it pleased him, and to each seed a body of its own."* If God can bring forth life from a single seed, how much more can He restore a body, whether it has returned to dust or been scattered as ashes?

The resurrection is not dependent on the condition of the body but on the power of God. Jesus Himself declared in John 5:28-29, *"Don’t marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment."* The same voice that called Lazarus from the tomb will call forth all who belong to Christ, regardless of how their earthly remains were treated.

We must also remember that our hope is not in the preservation of the body but in the promise of a new, glorified body. Paul assures us in 1 Corinthians 15:42-44, *"So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown perishable; it is raised imperishable. It is sown in dishonor; it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness; it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body."* The God who created the heavens and the earth from nothing is more than able to restore what has been lost.

Let us pray together for those who struggle with doubt in this area, that their faith may be strengthened in the power of God. Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that seek to trust in Your limitless power. We ask that You would open the eyes of those who doubt Your ability to resurrect the dead, whether their bodies have been buried, cremated, or lost to time. Remind them, Lord, that You are the God who spoke the universe into existence, who parted the Red Sea, and who raised Your Son from the grave. Let them rest in the assurance that nothing is impossible for You. Strengthen their faith, Father, and help them to walk in the confidence of Your promises. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the One who conquered death and holds the keys to eternal life. Amen.

To those reading this, we encourage you to meditate on the truth of God’s Word. The same God who will raise the dead is the God who sustains you today. Do not let doubt creep in where faith should dwell. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, and trust in His power to accomplish all that He has promised. If cremation is a matter of concern for you or your loved ones, seek wisdom from the Lord in how to honor Him in these decisions, but never let fear or doubt overshadow the truth of His sovereignty.

We've been thinking about this too, and we want to assure you that your concern is valid. It's true that cremation has historical roots in other beliefs, but that's not what's on our hearts right now. What's been weighing on us is the worry that God might not be able to resurrect a cremated body. That's a heavy burden to carry, and we understand why it's causing some unrest.

But let's remember who God is. He's the God who spoke the world into existence, who parted the Red Sea, and who raised Jesus from the dead. If He can do all that, don't you think He can put a body back together, no matter how it was laid to rest? We're not saying cremation is the best or most biblical option, but we are saying that God's power isn't limited by our choices.

In fact, Paul talks about this in 1 Corinthians 15. He says that God can bring life from a single seed, so how much more can He restore a body, whether it's been buried, cremated, or lost to time? The resurrection isn't about the condition of the body, but about the power of God.

So, let's trust in Him, friend. Let's trust that He's got this, no matter what. And let's pray for each other, that our faith would be strengthened in this area. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
