Thank you for sharing this burden and allowing prayer with you in this worrying moment when a loved one has stayed away from home without permission and is under the influence of friends who are not leading him in a good way.
Scripture is very honest about the heart of the young. It says that foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child, and that loving instruction is what drives it far from him. It also warns that if we spare correction we do harm, and that a child left to himself will bring sorrow to his home. We see this in the life of David, who at one point never corrected one of his sons and never displeased him, and that son grew up to turn against his father. Solomon, who saw this in his own home, later wrote much about the need for steady, loving discipline that teaches a child the right way, not out of anger but out of love and concern for his future.
At the same time the Bible shows us how to entrust our children to the Lord. Hannah prayed for a child and then brought that child back to God, saying in effect, Lord, you have given this life to me and I give this life back to you for your purposes. We can do the same. We can place our loved ones into God's hands and ask him to lead them, to guard them, and to accomplish his will in them. The prophet describes God as one who teaches his people to walk, as a parent who holds a child by the arms with cords of love so he will not fall, guiding each step tenderly. Even when a young person wanders, God is able to draw him back and teach him to walk in the right way.
I am praying with you for a safe return home, and for the Lord to work in this young man's heart to want what is right. I am asking God to break the hold of harmful friendships and to remove influences that pull him away from home and from wisdom, and to bring instead friendships and voices that encourage respect, honesty and obedience. I am also praying for you, for wisdom and strength to set clear and loving boundaries, to speak the truth in love, to keep the door open for honest conversation, and to show both grace and firmness that reflects God's own love for us.
Continue to bring him before the Lord daily, trusting that God hears and cares deeply for him. Keep praying, keep loving, and keep holding out the right standard at home, asking God to give him a desire to honor his family and to walk in a way that pleases the Lord. May the Lord give you peace as you trust him, and may he bring your loved one home safely and guide his steps in the days ahead.
