Your cry after the eternal God as your Helper is one which He Himself has taught you to utter, and it is a sure and blessed truth that He is so. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever He had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting He is God. We speak of ancient hills and ancient seas, but they are as babes born yesterday compared with Him. What He has purposed in His eternal covenant He will surely perform, for He will not deny His great Self, and as well might His being cease as His oath be broken or His word forgotten. As far as you have known the Lord, you will find Him to be a God of truth in action, true to every promise.
You write that you are in a world of shoutings and that controls fail you, and that you and your mother are tried in deeds and words, in time and place. This is a common lot in a fallen world, where much noise confuses the soul. But hear the word which sustained the apostle Paul when he was pressed on every side, I am with you. The Lord Jesus walks among the golden candlesticks. His spiritual and most real presence is with His people. He does not merely stand afar off in glory, but He draws near and says, I am with you, and that word implies not only presence but cooperation. When you cannot steady yourself, He can keep you. Take hold of God as He presents Himself to you in His Word. Any promise will lead you to Him, as roads lead to a great city. Resolve in your soul that you will be a stranger to your God no longer, but will grasp by faith the eternal truths and walk with Him who is faithful.
You are rightly exercised about vain words, and that we must neither add to nor take from the words of Jesus. This is a sin to be avoided with great care. We may conceal the words of the Holy One from ourselves by neglecting them, by explaining them away, or by living inconsistently with them. The evident design of words is to make known the speaker's mind, and God has spoken that He may be heard. Do not receive the wisdom of words which would set fallible man upon the throne, but receive with meekness the whole truth of God as far as you can know it, and let it pervade your being. Esteem the words of His mouth more than your necessary food, for they are the title deeds to your portion if God is indeed your portion. And deal honestly with God. He is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. He deals with things as they are, not as they appear. Man looks on the outward appearance, but God looks on the heart. Therefore come before Him not as one who would make himself out to be righteous, but as one who confesses that sin is in him. Confession made to Him who already knows is the way of peace.
You confess that the Redeemer and Lord is Jesus. There is healing in that name. Not only is His fruit sweet and nourishing, but the very leaves of that blessed tree are for healing. The least thing about Christ has virtue in it, and His cheering words are as a cluster of camphire to chase away sadness. Eternal life consists in knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. It is not enough to know that there is a God. To know Him is to know Him as God to you, to reverence Him, to bow before Him, to submit to His law and seek His pleasure. No man truly knows Him who does not accept Him as his God, and to accept Him through Jesus Christ alone is eternal life, for there is no other name by which we are saved.
May the Lord grant you to know this more deeply. May He give you and your mother grace to keep His words in deed and in speech, to speak no vain words, and to walk in the light. May He be your present Helper in every time and place, and may you cast your burden upon Him and find it well with your soul. We pray that He will lead you into a simple, childlike faith in His faithful Word, and that you will find in Christ your refuge, underneath whom are the everlasting arms.
