There is forgiveness with God, and your words concerning your mother and your remembrance of her have been heard with tenderness. You speak of numbers and autobiography, of deeds and words, of time and place, and of a mother named after her kindred, and you speak also of Jesus and of comfort after death, and it is right that all these things should be brought to the Word of God, for there alone is our sure comfort.
Know this, that forgiveness is not reckoned by numbers, nor earned by deeds, nor measured by an autobiography, however sincere. It is a divine forgiveness, "I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions." It is surprising forgiveness, so surprising that the Lord repeats it, lest any doubting soul should question it, and it is complete and eternal forgiveness. If you have felt your debt to God and have nothing to pay with, hear the proclamation, "There is forgiveness." Not a hope that perhaps there may be, but a certainty, "There is forgiveness with Thee." That forgiveness is only to be obtained from God, through Jesus Christ His Son, who bore the penalty in His personal suffering and death and obeyed the law to the utmost, and therefore God has highly exalted Him. He not only forgave at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, and the forgiveness which God gives for Christ's sake is an eternal forgiveness.
And as for comfort, the Lord saith, "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people." When He would comfort us, He quickens us by His Word, and this is our comfort in affliction, "Thy Word hath quickened me." It is not the letter alone, but the Spirit working by the Word, that brings peace to the aching heart. Full oft the bright winged seraph is sent to comfort some desponding heart, but the surest comfort is that which God Himself speaks to His people, and which His people speak one to another. If your mother trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ, then her comfort is not in a name given by relatives, nor in remembrance alone, but in Him who said, "I go to prepare a place for you." To be with Christ is the comfort of those who die in Him, for He is the only way of salvation, and there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.
You speak of remembrance, and here our Saviour gives us the true remembrance. He did not say, "This do in remembrance of one another," but "This do in remembrance of Me." We are to remember Christ, His flesh broken and His blood shed, the emblems together setting forth that violent death which He died for sinners. It is right to remember a beloved mother who taught you to love the Scriptures, as many were consecrated to God by such a mother, and to stir up your pure mind by way of remembrance. Yet the best remembrance lifts the heart from the creature to the Redeemer, from the one who has fallen asleep to Him who is the resurrection and the life.
Therefore, in time and place, now at this moment, there is forgiveness, and there is comfort to be had. Do not linger in the question whether there may be forgiveness, but flee to Christ by faith. He will receive the feeble, the guilty, the weak, the forlorn, and He will not meet them with scorn, but will bless them and save them.
We will pray for you, that the God of all comfort will comfort you with the comfort of His Word, that He will give you assurance of forgiveness through the blood of Jesus, and that your remembrance of your mother may be sanctified into remembrance of Christ, who alone quickens the dead and keeps His people unto eternal life. May you hear His voice saying, "There is forgiveness," and may that whisper drive away despair, and may you be kept in the hope that those who are in Christ shall be comforted forever in His presence.
