Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We rejoice with you in your desire to seek God's vision for your life rather than merely following your own personal goals, and we join you in prayer for this in Jesus' name.

You quoted Proverbs 29:18, which in its full context says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. This reminds us that true vision is not simply a personal ambition or a mystical image, but God's revealed will and His law made known to us. Without His revelation through His Word and by His Spirit, we wander without restraint. With it, we are blessed as we walk in obedience.

We also thank God with you that He does not change, for Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. You are right to praise Him because He is faithful to fulfill what He has promised.

God does still speak and give visions, as it is written It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. Yet we encourage you to seek the Giver more than the gift, and to test every vision against Scripture, for God's visions will never contradict His written Word. His primary vision for you is found in His Word, and He promises I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. Psalm 32:8. And also Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights with no variableness or shadow of turning, and that every good and perfect gift comes from Your hand. We lift up this dear one to You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, asking that You pour out Your Spirit and grant clear revelation and godly vision according to Your will, not according to fleshly ambition. Lead this life away from merely pursuing personal goals and into the center of Your purposes, for You have said For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. Grant discernment to recognize Your voice, humility to obey Your Word, and patience to wait for Your timing, for the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay. Habakkuk 2:3. Let every vision You give be confirmed by Scripture, bear fruit that honors Christ, and draw this heart closer to Jesus. Fulfill what You have spoken, and let Your name be glorified. We love the heart behind your request. Wanting God to shape your direction instead of just chasing your own goals is a good and humble place to be, and we are glad to pray with you for that.

We believe God delights to communicate with His people and to give purpose that is bigger than our own plans. A true vision from Him is less about a dramatic picture and more about a steady sense of His calling that pulls us toward what is above and steadies our daily choices. It grows as we stay close to Him.

One simple practice that often helps is to keep a quiet, unhurried time each day to meet with the Lord through Scripture and prayer, and to jot down what you sense He is highlighting, whether a conviction, a direction, or a burden to serve. Over time you can prayerfully review those notes with a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you well, to help discern what is from the Lord.

Father, we thank You for this one who wants to follow You. Give them clear wisdom and a growing sense of Your purposes for their life. Quiet any pressure to strive, and lead them step by step in Your way. Help them to hear Your voice and to walk faithfully with You. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a right and gracious desire that you have expressed, to seek not your own personal goals but the revelation and guidance of the Lord. Where there is no vision the people indeed perish, for without the Word of the Lord and the light of His Spirit we wander as those without a guide.

We rejoice with you that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. He does not change like shifting shadows, and what He purposes He will surely fulfil. His divine purpose moves on like the great sea, and though we are but waves, His counsel shall stand.

Your prayer is that you may receive vision from God, and we join you in asking that He would grant you that heavenly calling of which the Scripture speaks, a calling not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. It is a high calling and a holy calling, a calling from heaven and to heaven, which lifts the heart and sets it upon heavenly things, upon eternity and holiness. May the Lord call you by name as a shepherd calls his own sheep, and may you know His voice and follow Him.

True vision is not the imagination of our own hearts, but that divine guidance whereby He infuses great principles within us, to avoid everything that is evil, to bow with submission to His will, and to be attentive to the mind of Christ as expressed by the Holy Spirit in the Word and in His gentle monitions within. The Lord guides His people by His counsel and afterward receives them to glory. Haste is the author of much mischief, but grace dethrones obstinacy and gives acquiescence in the divine will, and by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance.

O Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, we thank Thee that Thou art unchanging and faithful to fulfil all that Thou hast promised. We ask in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus that Thou wouldst grant to this soul true vision, not after the flesh, but according to Thy Word. Open the eyes of the understanding, give light upon the Scriptures, and make plain the path of obedience. Let Thy heavenly calling be made sure, and press this heart forward toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Keep from following mere personal goals, and cause to hear Thy voice saying, This is the way, walk ye in it. Lead by Thy counsel in this life and afterward receive to glory, for Jesus sake. Amen.

Your desire to be led by God rather than by your own personal goals is good and pleasing to Him, and I thank God for the hunger you have expressed.

The verse you mentioned is often understood to mean personal pictures or dreams, but in Proverbs 29:18 the word translated vision means the revealed word and counsel of God. Where there is no prophetic revelation, no clear word from God, the people cast off restraint. The need is not for a new mystical experience, but for a clear sight of what God has already spoken, so that your mind and life are ordered by His truth and not by confused or distorted desires. As Scripture teaches, a disordered eye mistakes what is before it, and a mind made turbid by its own thoughts confuses the way. A healthy vision is needed, and that health comes when the eye of our understanding is kept clear by the Word of God.

This is why the Scriptures show that God gave sensible visions and signs not as the ordinary way for His people, but for particular reasons and for those who needed them. To the shepherds who were simple, and to Zacharias and the Virgin who were to receive great tidings before the event, a marvelous vision was given. But Joseph, who was full of faith and already wrestling in his heart, did not need such a vision beforehand, and when the angel did speak to him, it was to confirm what God already knew was hidden in his heart. In the same way at the baptism of Jesus and at Pentecost, there was a dove and a sound of mighty wind and tongues of fire, but not for the sake of the apostles themselves. Those signs were for those present who did not yet believe, to point them to the Son of God. For those who believe, faith suffices instead of all sensible signs, and we receive and walk by what has already been manifested to us in Christ and in the Scriptures.

God does not change like shifting shadows, and every good and perfect gift does come down from the Father of lights. He does still guide His children, but His ordinary and sure way of giving vision today is to open your eyes to understand His written Word, to grant wisdom through prayer, and to lead you through obedience, the counsel of the church, and the work of the Holy Spirit in your heart. Do not seek visions as a proof of His favor or as a way to know His will apart from Scripture. Seek instead to know Christ more fully, for through Him we have been blessed and chosen, and through Him the Father will show you the path He prepared for you from the beginning.

So let us pray together for the true vision you need.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are unchanging and that every good gift comes from You. We thank You for this heart that does not want to follow personal goals alone but wants to be led by You. Grant clear sight through Your Word. Remove confusion and give a healthy eye of understanding, that Your will may be known and obeyed. Keep this life from following empty desires, and make it faithful in the small things You have already revealed. Lead by Your Spirit, by Scripture, and by wisdom, and fulfill the good purposes You have shown. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus, our only Savior, amen.
