Vision

Your hunger to follow what God shows you rather than only your own plans is a good desire, and God honors it. You quoted that He does not change like shifting shadows and that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of lights, and that is true. He is steady and faithful, and He will fulfill what He has promised.

The verse you mentioned is often understood as speaking about personal goals or ambitions, but its meaning is deeper. The vision there is the revealed Word of God. When that revelation is neglected, people are left without restraint and wander, searching here and there for something to satisfy the emptiness inside. If the heart is not satisfied in hearing and receiving what God has spoken, it will keep looking for fulfillment in other places and not find it. True vision is not simply a personal plan for life, but hearing God speak through His Word and living under its direction.

God has a purpose that He has purposed for the whole earth, and His purposes will stand. He keeps His Word. What He has foretold that has not yet come to pass will surely come to pass, and there will be a glorious day when Jesus comes again to establish His kingdom. He created you as an object of His love, with a divine and eternal purpose, that you might have fellowship with Him now and forever. He is inviting you even now, for His message through the ages has been to turn to Him and He will turn to you. If you seek Him, He will be found by you.

This helps us understand prayer as well. The purpose of prayer is not to make God yield to our will and answer our demands, but to bring our hearts into alignment with His will so that His will may be done. His will for your life is the very best that could happen to you, because He loves you. So we do not pray to change God, we pray to be changed and guided by Him.

At times God does give a vision in the sense of allowing someone to look into what is outside our time, seeing things that have not yet happened in our experience but will happen in the future as if they were present. Much of what was shown to the prophets was sealed until the time when knowledge would increase and events would make it clear. But the sure and steady way God gives vision today is through His written Word, His sure word of prophecy which is faithful and true. To grow in vision is to grow in hearing, understanding, and obeying Scripture, letting it correct and guide you and bring forth the peaceable fruit of righteousness, so that you are not left to perish for lack of revelation.

So my prayer for you is that God would satisfy your heart in His Word and make His will clear to you. May He turn your desires toward His own purposes, give you a love for Scripture and ears to hear it, and lead you away from merely following personal goals into walking in the good plan He has for you. May He keep you close as you stay close to Him, and establish you in the hope of His promises which He will surely fulfill. In the name of Jesus, amen.
