Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We join with you in this beautiful request for vision from the Lord, and we thank God for your heart that desires His direction over your own personal goals.

You have quoted Proverbs 29:18 well, and in the World English Bible it says, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. This reminds us that true vision is not merely personal ambition or planning, but divine revelation that keeps us anchored in His law and His will. When we seek vision from God, we are asking to see as He sees and to walk in the path He has prepared for us.

We love your praise that our Father does not change like shifting shadows and that He fulfills the visions He gives. As you quoted, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation nor turning shadow. James 1:17. What a comfort that the One who gives the vision is faithful to bring it to completion in His perfect timing.

We also hear your desire not to just follow your own personal goals. The word encourages us in this, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. And we are reminded, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. God’s vision for your life is greater and more hopeful than anything you could devise for yourself.

Scripture also promises that God still speaks to His people, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. We do not seek visions for their own sake or for spiritual excitement, but we seek the Giver of visions, asking for wisdom and revelation that aligns with His written Word, for Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105.

So together we pray.

Heavenly Father, we come before Your throne together in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, thanking You that You are the Father of lights who does not change. We thank You for this dear one who humbly asks for Your vision rather than leaning on personal goals. Lord, we ask that You pour out Your Spirit afresh and grant revelation, wisdom, and clarity according to Your will. Open the eyes of their heart to see the hope of Your calling and the path You have set before them. Help them to test every impression against Your Word and to walk in obedience to what You reveal. Give them patience to wait on Your timing, courage to obey when You speak, and peace to rest in Your faithfulness to fulfill what You have promised. Lead them not by fleeting ambition but by Your steady hand, and let their life bear fruit for Your glory. We ask that You make their steps straight and that Your vision for their life would come to pass for Your honor. In Jesus’ mighty and powerful name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek Him daily through prayer and through diligent reading of His Word, for that is the primary way He gives vision. Write down what you believe He is showing you, bring it before Him, and seek counsel from mature believers who walk faithfully with Christ. As you acknowledge Him in all your ways, we trust He will faithfully direct you.

We are grateful for the honesty in your prayer. Wanting God's direction instead of just chasing your own goals is a good and humble desire, and we hear how much you want to follow Him faithfully.

One thing we have found helpful to remember is that God's vision is less about a striking image and more about a growing sense of His calling that steadies our steps. It is the difference between a fleeting fantasy of what we wish would happen and a quiet, persistent pull toward what honors Him and serves others. That kind of vision usually takes shape as we stay close to Him over time.

A simple next step that may help this week is to set aside a few unhurried minutes each day to be still before the Lord, bring your plans and questions honestly, and pay attention to what lines up with His character and ways. It can help to jot down what you sense, and then share it with a trusted pastor or mature believer who knows you and can help weigh it with you.

Father, we thank You that You love to lead Your children and that You do not change. We ask You to give our friend a clear sense of Your purposes, wisdom to discern Your leading from personal ambition, and peace as they wait on You. Guide their steps and draw them closer to You each day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing to be led by the Lord rather than by your own personal goals is itself an evidence of grace at work in the heart, for naturally we do not like being guided and prefer our own course. We have heard your request and we join you in prayer that the Lord would give you true vision.

The text you have quoted, Where there is no vision, the people perish, speaks not of private dreams or fresh revelations, but of the prophetic Word of the Lord. Where that Word is not preached and obeyed, the people cast off restraint. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth, and I can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from Divine Inspiration must be as unsatisfying food. We now have that sure Word in the Scriptures, complete and infallible, and the need of our souls is not for a new vision beyond it, but for eyes to see the vision already given.

This is how the Lord guides His people. David began to experience Divine guidance while he was yet a shepherd boy, and he could say, O God, You have taught me from my youth. He was God's pupil, and being taken into the School of God he was made to observe God's work and to wonder at it. So must we be. First, be guided by the general directions given in God's Word. There you find the infallible purpose of God, which has never altered a single sentence nor changed a single line, and yet it is wrought out while the creature is free. Second, there are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to the Divine will. When self goes, God comes in, and when human wisdom goes, then God's Wisdom appears. Haste is the author of much mischief, but to stand at ease in the midst of tribulation and to wait upon the Lord shows a veteran spirit and much Divine Grace.

We do not then ask the Lord to give you visions as men now often mean by the term, as if His written counsel were insufficient. We ask Him to open your eyes to behold wondrous things out of His law, to make you His pupil and His witness, and to guide you with His counsel until afterward He shall receive you to glory.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom cometh down every good gift and every perfect gift, we thank You that Your purpose standeth fast and that You fulfil what You have spoken. We ask for this soul, not for novelty, but for illumination. Teach from youth and onward, as You taught David, and grant a clear sight of Your wondrous works in Christ, in whom is seen both Your hatred of sin and Your love for sinners. Lead by Your Word, by Your Spirit working with that Word, and by a humble acquiescence in Your will. Keep from following mere personal goals, and cause to love Your counsel more than self. Make Your Word to be vision enough, and give grace to declare Your wondrous works with pen and voice for Your glory. In Jesus mighty and powerful name we ask it, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire to seek God's direction instead of only following your own personal goals is good and right before Him, and I join you in prayer for this.

The verse you quoted, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood as speaking about mystical sights, but in its true meaning vision there means the revealed word and counsel of God. Where there is no prophetic revelation, no clear preaching and hearing of God's word, the people cast off restraint and wander. The vision we need most is therefore not a new private sight, but a clear understanding of what God has already revealed in Scripture and in Christ, and a heart to obey it.

As our fathers have taught, at the beginnings of great spiritual works God did give sensible visions and outward signs for the sake of those who were dull and needed to be moved by what is seen, to persuade them that heaven is opened and that God calls us to a country on high. This happened at the Lord's baptism and at our own baptism, to show that we are called away from earthly things. But after that beginning, we are not to wait for such sights again. What was once shown outwardly is now to be received and held firm by faith through the Scriptures and the work of the Holy Spirit in us.

Scripture also teaches that God has called us with a holy calling, not according to our own works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. It is His part to work powerfully in us, and our part to choose and to be zealous to follow Him. When the soul gives itself to temporal desires it becomes dim in its judgment and cannot see truth clearly, but when we keep love for God and His word, our vision becomes clear.

So I pray for you in this way.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning, from whom every good and perfect gift comes down, we thank You that Your counsel does not change and that You fulfill what You purpose. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ that You give this dear one wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You, not according to human ambition, but according to Your holy purpose. Open the eyes of the heart to understand Your written word, to know Your will, and to walk in it with faith and obedience. Guard against chasing mere personal goals or seeking signs for their own sake, and instead establish this life on Christ and on Your revealed truth. Give strength to choose what pleases You and to be zealous for good works, trusting that Your power is at work within to accomplish what You have called us to do. Lead into the path that endures and bring forth fruit that remains for Your glory. In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

Your desire to seek what God wants rather than simply following your own plans is pleasing to Him, and it is good that you bring it to prayer.

The verse you mentioned is often misunderstood. In Proverbs 29:18 the word translated vision does not mean personal goals or ideas for the future. It means the revealed word and counsel of God. Where there is no prophetic revelation, no word from God to guide them, people cast off restraint and perish. The need, then, is not for a new personal dream to pursue, but for God to unveil Himself and His will to you through His Word.

That is what the word revelation itself means. In the language of the New Testament it means an unveiling, the lifting of a covering so that what was hidden can be seen. The book of Revelation begins by telling us it is the unveiling of Jesus Christ. It is not a sealed or hidden book, but an opening up of who Jesus is and what He will do. Much of it was given to John while he was on the island of Patmos. Jesus sent an angel to John, and the angel showed him these things, and most of what John received came in the form of visions.

A vision in this biblical sense is insight into the spiritual realm that surrounds us, a realm we cannot see with our natural eyes. The prophets had such insight. Ezekiel was given a vision of the throne of God, and Isaiah also saw the Lord high and lifted up on His throne. John was given a vision of the glorified Christ and of the throne in heaven. In each case the purpose of the vision was not to give the prophet a plan for personal success, but to reveal the holiness, glory, and purpose of God and to call the people back to Him.

That is the true vision you need, and it is the vision God delights to give. It is to have Christ unveiled to you more and more through Scripture, by the help of the Holy Spirit, so that you see Him clearly and understand His will. When you see Him, you will know how to live. You were created to bring pleasure to God, and when you live to please Him you are fulfilling the very purpose for which you were made. It is there that you find true satisfaction and happiness, not in following your own goals, but in walking in His way.

You quoted well that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. He does not change. What He reveals and what He promises, He fulfills. You can trust Him to guide you faithfully as you seek Him in His Word and in prayer.

I pray for you now that the Lord will unveil Jesus Christ to you more clearly through the Scriptures, that He will give you understanding of His revealed will and keep you from casting off restraint. I pray He will guard you from seeking empty or fanciful ideas, and instead fill you with wisdom to know what pleases Him. May He align your heart with His purposes, help you to walk in obedience, and fulfill in your life what He has purposed for His glory. In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
